Here's a review from ign.com about New Avengers #38.
Warning: Light spoilers ahead for the contents of this issue (as if you couldn't tell from the cover).
I'm of the mind that Bendis and Gaydos's Alias was one of the best series Marvel ever commissioned in their history as a publishing company, so the fact that New Avengers #38 a.) is written and drawn by that team, b.) is Jessica Jones-centric, and c.) shows that old Avengers photo with Jewel, all come together to incite some wicked nostalgia in me. I'm almost predisposed to over-like this issue. If you aren't an old-school Bendis/Gaydos fan, I'm not sure you can find as much to love here as I did, but there's still a thing or two to appreciate.
This issue is titled "The Breakup," and predictably features a blowout between Jessica Jones and Luke Cage over her actions in New Avengers Annual #2. If there's one character in the book that Bendis knows backwards and forwards, it's the one he created. Jessica and Luke's fight is scripted perfectly and it's actually a joy to read. There's also a great page with an Ares chauvinist gag.
Looking at the issue objectively, though, it's really a rather down issue. Not much really happens. Strangely, the "Infiltration" tie-in advertised on the cover borders on an infamous Infinite Crisis "red skies" crossover. (For those unaware, in the '80s DC "tied in" many DCU books to the Crisis event hype by making the skies red - and that's it.) Marvel seems to be misleading readers already, which might not be a good sign for future Secret Invasion tie-ins.
I think I enjoyed this issue more than most will. Taking that into account, you could probably skip this issue if you don't give a d**n about Jessica Jones or Luke Cage.
Review Score:7.7 Good

Just thought I would post a review that was not so good. Every issue of Hippie Avengers, er, Liberal Avengers, that is "New Avengers" #38 should be sold with a block of Gouda or Swiss, because only cheese can properly accompany this much whine. Luke Cage and Jessica Jones have a talk about their relationship. A long talk. Like, more than ten pages of talking. Seriously. Oh, and Danny Rand rents an apartment. Well, "squats" more like it, but it's best not to think about that. For all this tense character work, nothing at the end of the issue is substantially different from anything at the beginning, so why did this issue even happen? That's a good question ... Yes, Bendis needs to change the title from New Avengers to Alias II, or maybe Spider-man and the Amazing Couch-Surfers. New "Avengers" and Ultimates 3 continue to disappoint me. I am enjoying Millar's FF, House of M Avengers, and X-force, though.

Well Starfoxx
Millar and Hitch are doing other projects and the Ultimates are stuck with Loeb.
I knew no one would care about the Luke Cage/Jesscia Jones break up.

Did anyone else notice Ms. Marvel had an "S" on her costume instead of her usual Lightning bolt?? "S" for Skrull?

I didn't mind this issue a whole lot, as it felt like a follow-up to the Annual, but . . . eh, talk about a snooze-fest. I would have liked a little more development of the Skrull story and dealing with more of the trust issues everyone is having.
I DID like the "Avengers Apartment" scene. It was fun.

Come on guys--The Avengers have their first female writer! Thath tho progressith. Okay. I can understand attacking the comic itself, but the pure immaturity of attacking the writer himself is just stupid. That would be like me attacking you personally instead your opinions.

His style is very effeminate. Endless talking, no fighting, endless yammering about feelings. Those are all traits found in "chick flicks"--which most guys don't like, and hence the name. Bendis may indeed sport a thingy, but his mind is female. Miss Bendis is the Hedwig of Marvel Comics
Woodsie--who died and left you hall monitor? I'll say what I want to say. got it?

There are some good female writers writing superheroes (Gail Simone for example) and some writers that can write good female characters in superheroes comics. Not the case with BENDIS! Matter of fact I think he hates women...

Have you even read a comic by a female writer? I mean, for goodness sake, can you spout any more cliches? And how can I take your opinion remotely serious when all you're doing is making fun of the writer? He's also bald. You wanna whip out some cue-ball jokes while you're at it?

Come on guys--The Avengers have their first female writer! Thath tho progressith. Okay. I can understand attacking the comic itself, but the pure immaturity of attacking the writer himself is just stupid. That would be like me attacking you personally instead your opinions. I'm sorry to interrupt here, but this isn't entirely accurate. The poster may not be doing it in the best possible fashion, but he is using Bendis' writing style as the basis for his critique. If someone compared the aforementioned Gail Simone and said she wrote in the style of the hardboiled pulp writing men of the fifties, that would be an entirely valid type of comparison. To say that Bendis is talky and other types of characteristics associated with women is an exaggerated way to make a similar point. Nothing wrong with it per se, as opposed to your later comment wherein you say that his baldness would be a ridiculous criteria, which is true. So it's not stupid, it's just not an assessment or way of making a point you agree with. However I'm sure there are any number of movie critics to book reviewers at the Times Book review who've used masculinity and femininity to make a point about a writing style. So it's just not your cup of tea.
