I enjoy the parallels in comic books (as well as all forms of art) to the history at the time of the books creation. That's why I would rather dig through the dollar bins for old comics rather than buy collections or reprints. The letter pages and advertisements are sometimes my favorite parts! I hear you, starfoxxx. I have the Essentials and the collections (such as the Celestial Madonna tpb), DC Showcases, etc...but I also buy as many back issues as I can, partly for the reasons you state. It's great to be able to see how ideas and changes were received in the past (as revealed in the Bulletins and/or letter columns). Back when I was reading Marvel comics as a kid, there were times when I almost preferred reading the letters and Bulletins to the actual comic story itself! Stan and company really made you feel like you were part of a community. EDIT: added Starfoxxx's quote

This was part of Marvel's success, wasn't it? Stan's revolution was addressing the readers in such a friendly way that they felt truly involved in the comic...

Did Celestial Madonna lead to anything? Has there been a Celestial Messiah?

We did get to see Mantis' son in the Celestial Quest. I recall it only vaguely. He looked a bit like a tree and acted like a stereotypical teenager. I'm not sure if he has been seen again.

Anybody see the alternate reality story that's reprinted in Essential Silver Surfer volume 2, featuring the Surfer, Mantis, and her son Sprout? Apparently this story was intended for an 80s SS series but was shelved; it finally saw print in Marvel Fanfare #51.
In it, the lad discovers he can turn into a tree from the neck down. He battles the baddies with his branches, like an arboreal Mr. Fantastic.
Story by Englehart, art by Big John...though Jack Abel's inks really flatten the pencils.

Silly, silly, silly. I can almost hear Big John cursing as he pencilled that story.

Say, Bong --
Now that you're back, are you going to continue with these polls? They always seemed to stimulate a little controversy and discussion. And, since it's getting slower and slower around here, a little injection might help!!

I hate some of the things Englehart did with Mantis, but think the character would have been a great addition to the team in the long run, especially if handled by other writers. She's an Asian woman, a woman of action, possesses an interesting backstory and had some very powerful character flaws. All very interesting things and a lot of the qualities I look for in a hero. I think someone else might've stripped her of that Celestial Madonna baggage (after all, once she'd given birth she no longer had that title, right? )and run with her trying to accept the burden of giving her child to the universe she could've been really interesting. A mother having to give up her child is such a strong deep resonant story and imagine a mom who had to give her child to the universe for some abstract good. That's really strong stuff and in the hands of a good writer could be spectacular.

The letter pages and advertisements are sometimes my favorite parts! starfoxxx: I wholeheartedly agree! Infact, sometimes, The Bullpen Bulletin and letters pages are the only things that interest me in certain comics that I own! I just love how Stan and the Bullpen gang would always make it seem like we, the readers, were part of their huge happy family. On the subject of Mantis: I honestly never cared for her, no matter how hard everyone tried to... let's say, shove her down our throats in certain situations. She just to me seemed like someone that really didn't belong on The Avengers during her run, like she was just someone to try and make the team look more interesting than it was. I get the same vibes from Moondragon, as well. I give Mantis a 1.
