Thanks for all the birthday wishes. And HB, I did party but it was an awards banquet for my theatre students which happened to get scheduled on my birthday. Bless their little hearts - they gave me a cane. They're such a funny bunch. NOT! It's nice to be able to come here and talk about comic book memories from my childhood without having to feel like people are saying "He rembembers that. Wow, he's ancient." - Okay, Woodside and a couple of other younguns may think that.

Oh wow, Happy Birthday DLW! That's great---! Are you noticing that middle age isn't nearly as bad as folks always made it out to be? 44 is the new 41, or something like that. . .

Probably you alone may appreciate that we're opening THE SEAGULL at the theater I work for in DC tomorrow. A new adaptation (by our artistic director) of a new translation. I now know for sure that I do not love Chekov. . . (We're publicizing it as a rip-snortin' comedy. . . which is just hard to juxtapose with the fact that the main character blows his brains out on the last page. . . OOOH! Sorry! Retroactive spoiler alert for anyone still reading. . . !) HB

Ha Ha. I remember seeing a production of the Seagull in college. I don't however remember my sides hurting from all the laughing. It's sort of "Theatre that's good for you" which I admit to not being the biggest fan of.

Wellllll, it does seem to be hindered by the fact that it's not inherently funny (despite what Chekov insisted about the nature of most of his major plays). Probably needs spit-takes. . . HB

HB, I love Chekhov (and I don't mean the guy in Star Trek). And I think the humor has to be made evident, otherwise the plays can become just too morose and unwatchable. I recall reading that ol' Patton himself, George C. Scott, was upset that he wsn't getting laughs as Astrov (in Uncle Vanya) and that Nicol Williamson (Vanya) was...now that's a production I would've loved to have seen. As for The Seagull, a production that stands out for me is one that was televised on PBS in the late '70s (probably the Williamstown production), with Blythe Danner as Nina. She was ridiculous and heartbreaking--perfect. I also remember being impressed by Kevin McCarthy (Trigorin).

Thanks to all for the kind wishes! I don't have much to tell about any gifts, as we are not celebrating for a couple of days due to my kids' sports this weekend. When the dust settles, we'll get around to some gift-receiving (although I did try to talk my wife into a new car -- still working on that one )!

You might ask her to buy you a piece each year. By 2039 there would be a brand new car ;D

I can hear the disgruntled voices ringing across the internet waves: "For god's sake-- how in the name of Uncle Vanya did a tangential mini-thread about Chekov sneak in here?? Where's Security??" I guess I'll just do the damage whilst I can, and then run. . . Two thoughts I have, Sharkar: 1) Chekov himself supposedly HATED the famous Moscow Art Theater productions of his works (directed by Stanislavsky, I believe?), claiming, of course, that they were dreadfully slow-paced, and completely missed the comic elements-- treating everything with grave dramatic seriousness. And, of course, that pretty much set the standard for these works from then on. 2) As I was watching a dress rehearsal, I found myself wondering how it would work if ALL convention was abandon, and the play was done completely over-the-top? What if it was a Monty Python piece? What if NONE of it took itself seriously? We did get a nice bit of preview press in the Washington Post this morning, though. I do feel like we tend to come off sounding pretentious. . . (and I'm now ready to accept rebukes for being so shamelessly off-topic. . . ) HB

As mentioned, the comedic parts need to be evident. 2) As I was watching a dress rehearsal, I found myself wondering how it would work if ALL convention was abandon, and the play was done completely over-the-top? What if it was a Monty Python piece? What if NONE of it took itself seriously? Ideally the elements (comic and otherwise) would be balanced. We did get a nice bit of preview press in the Washington Post this morning, though. Nice. I'll take a look online. (and I'm now ready to accept rebukes for being so shamelessly off-topic. . . ) Yes, shame on you for mentioning Chekhov ...and shame, shame, shame on me for taking the bait! Okay, I can get this back on topic: Shiryu, how about one of your wonderful "gifs" for dlw (and yes, Shiryu, I am stealing your joke!

I am not worthy of a gif that special, or that large!! ;D Oh, you are, you are. You deserve much credit for bearing so well the fact that your birthday and Father's day are clearly almost ALWAYS going to be right on top of each other! Your two main "appreciation" holidays got re-packaged into one Special Big Buy unit. It's never as lucrative, that way, sadly. . . HB

Thanks, guys, gals, clones, androids, robots, etc. etc.
I got the Marvel Monopoly game, and my girlfriend also found a nice copy of Captain Marvel #3 from 1968 in great condition.....and the best part is she found it at a little hole-in-the-wall antiques store just 15 minutes away with a TON of 60's-70's comics, old toys, records.....my kind of place to waste time, and maybe a little $$.
