UNCANNY AVENGERS volume 2 (!) #1 review 2/1/2015

Roll Call

Vision, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Rogue (who absorbed Wonder Man in Volume 1) , Falcon/Cap, Brother Voodoo, and Sabretooth....

Acuna's cover and interior art is very nice, as is the coloring.....my only slight problem with the art is the first scenes' chase/fight between Quicksilver and a Cheetah-man. A bit confusing, but high speed battles have ALWAYS been a little hard to depict, as well as follow! Wanda chides Cheetah-man for not having his "eyes front" when he runs into a wall, but it looks to me like he was looking straight ahead; I guess just a gaffe between artist and script.

Another thing about the first scene>> I don't particularly like Remender's choice of "voice" for Pietro.....I seem to remember him having a more formal, almost eloquent way of speaking, and not really having a sense of humor. And I guess the last 10 years have changed Wanda, ala Dark Phoenix, and now every writer writes her as a bad-ass.

Wanda and Rogue's costume updates are the only ones I like. I like that Remender threw in Rogue saying "SUGAH",

Having the Vision return is great, I really missed him on the team......I guess he's been appearing as an Avenger for the last couple of years, but this issue is the first in a looooong time when I felt like the Vizh is back!

While Falcon/Cap doesn't have much to do this issue, I was REALLY surprised by how much I liked Brother Voodoo here! Sure, he's just a stand-in for Dr Strange, but I found myself liking the idea of BV as an Avenger for the first time! And Acuna does cool stuff with BV artistically.

Okay, Sabretooth.........oh boy, now he's fighting his inner bloodthirsty villain because now he is "morally good"......it's just stupid, IMHO.

And I know this re-imagining of Wanda and Pietro's origins/powers/parentage/mutation is all part of Marvel's totally crapping on years of MU history to tie-in to movies.......but I REALLY don't care as long as Marvel puts out a few comics that I can just enjoy because they are written and drawn well. This issue wasn't the greatest, but I like the way Remender set up some of the Avengers with intriguing storylines, now let's hope he gets the ball rolling, and doesn't take years and years. Especially the fate of Wonder Man. This issue (hopefully) seems to be a set-up for a confrontation with an old foe and his lackeys, and it was good enough that I will stick with Uncanny Avengers for another issue.

Okay, here's a report for the 4 or 5 who still look at this site, ha-ha!

Uncanny Avengers #2 -----the cover shows the Avengers battling a bunch of baddies----this DOES NOT happen in this issue!!!!

I felt like this issue was heavy on Sabretooth (still a lame choice, IMO), and light on the other Avengers.

The plots plods along VERY slowly, and I keep feeling like I know what the outcome (concerning Wanda and Pietro's origins)will be; I hope there's a twist or two to make it interesting. I also have never been a fan of the High Evolutionary as a villain.

And I guess the final page is an intriguing surprise.....but one that will complicate things, I think!

I know. . . I KNOW. . . that I'm opening a can of worms with this question, but I honestly don't understand the particulars: If the whole blinkin' MU is being re-booted/started-over from scratch (am I correct about that?) in a few weeks-- then what's the point of starting this book over again at this point?

Or does the fact that I'm not reading anything now make it impossible to explain??

I also am pretty confused-----but I've never been such a nit-picker about the finer details, as long as the story, art and (especially) the characterizations are quality. I just hope those three elements stay up to my standards for Uncanny Avengers, or I'll drop it. The same goes for the only other titles I'm buying right now, STAR WARS and DARTH VADER.


And here are a couple future Marvel projects I am NOT going to buy.....and it's just a coincidence they BOTH are written by BMB....

There's an OLD MAN LOGAN title coming out.....but it WON'T be written by MILLAR, this time......instead it's Bendis.
Well, the original OLD MAN LOGAN arc was very well done, IMO, and probably one of the better stories I've read in the last 10 years.
But, just like ABNETT and LANNING'S Guardians of the Galaxy (another one of my "recent" favorites), Marvel has decided to let BMB take over a great "franchise", and will probably ruin it like he's prone to do...(IMHO).

Also, I can't say enough how I HATE when Marvel constantly reboots flagship titles, and starts over the numbering to sell #1 issues....
But then they "conveniently" go back to the original numbering (adding up all the volumes' issues) when they hit a centennial....
Well, UNCANNY X-MEN #600 (written by BMB, but I don't think he had anything to do with the #600 gimmick).....They go from Uncanny X-men #35 to......#600!!!!! I wonder how much the cover price will be??....probably at least 7-10 bucks. oh boy. The good thing for X-fans (I haven't REALLY read any X-books since 1991) is that this will be BMB's last issue.....Now what franchise will he go on to ruin??? Look out STAR WARS!!!

It's all marketing. I am at the point in "The History of Marvel Comics" where they talk about the Liefeld/MacFarlane/Lee years and how Marvel started doing reboots and gimmicky covers and every off--shoot of the X-Men they could dream up. All of it was a cynical attempt to get neo-collectors to think they were purchasing issues that would be worth hundreds of dollars in a short amount of time. Of course none of that stuff turned out to be worth anything and after a while the gimmicky crap stopped selling. That being said, I read that Liefeld auctioned off some original art from the X-Men and got $39,000 for it. I think I'm going to kill myself.

As of yet, I haven't followed UA into this new volume. AXIS left such a poor taste in my mouth, with it's rushed plotting and nonsensical results. I almost wish that Editorial had left Remender's idea alone so he could have executed it more properly as the ending of UA Vol 1.

As for whether this title might continue or not,  Marvel recently confirmed that at least 33 of their titles will be cancelled (for now) in lieu of the Secret Wars event. Here's the list:
