Okay, just a goofy topic for fun---- I am a fan of ALL Wonder Man's costumes. I love the safari jacket look, the original green/red/yellow look and the subsequent variations, and the WCA sleeveless black/red look (which Simon seems to be wearing a version of nowadays). I think Simon should wear various looks as he sees fit, as his movie star status could use a turn as a fashionista, ala the Wasp. As long as he keeps the sunglasses/goggles and the W motif so he is recognizable. But I was recently thumbing through a 2000 Wizard mag with an article on the c. 2000 Avengers: United They Stand cartoon----and I have to say, the costume Simon wore in that cartoon is probably my favorite. mikescollection.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/marv-wonder-man-toybiz-full.jpgencrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRVBhQY3shU4kBEY4wLCkks_s5wdQ4hUW1Kk6j5NoZK7Zc6WXBa

My favorite Wonder Man costume is the one on the far right in your second link. The costume from the first link is pretty good, too. Overall, though, I don't like too many of Simon's costumes, including the red safari jacket, though I'm probably in the minority on that.

My favorite Wonder Man costume is the one on the far right in your second link. The costume from the first link is pretty good, too. Overall, though, I don't like too many of Simon's costumes, including the red safari jacket, though I'm probably in the minority on that. He's gone through many outfits, hasn't he? Not identities-- just different sets of togs in what would seem to be a quest for something that is "iconically" Wonder-Man-esque, y'know? And I think. . . I think the problem is that his hero-identity-- "Wonder-Man"-- was kind of an outdated throw-back to the Golden Age even when Stan came up with it in '64. But unlike Superman or Wonder Woman, f'rinstance, there hadn't already been decades of use for folks to get used to it, so he gets the rather generic-but-familiar name, but it lends itself not-a-bit to anything visual in the way of costume design. Well, other than the letter "W", which we do see incorporated into a lot of his outfits. . . but even those look pretty darned visually forced. But again, no theme or quality or trait that has an intrinsic Wonder-Man-ness to it. Hence, so many of his costume designs have had a painfully generic, style-of-the-moment look to them. Except for two (that I can think of): a) His whole Ionic Energy Being look, which I like quite a bit-- although his switched-off costume is still unremarkable. b) The dreaded safari jacket. Which, to tell you the truth, Ulty, I do dearly love-! Fashion liability or not, it is immediately identifiable as Wonder-Man's look. I might even dare to call it his iconic look. And while it doesn't have anything to do with the word "wonder", it is very much a product of Simon's long, determined, oft-amusing efforts at having a Hollywood career. Practical? Probably not to great to move in, no-- but you know what? It DOES have a bunch of pockets! I think. . . I think this look may have been the precursor to the Gatherer-era bomber jackets-! HB

I almost got the idea that Stan came up with a Wonder Man because DC had a Wonder Woman and Marvel wanted rights to the name, though I'm sure that's not the case. He does seem to have a very generic "super-guy" sort of start, though, eh? So, yes, the search for an iconic costume continues. Where is Dave Cockrum when you need him?
I don't like his red safari jacket, but if Wondy has an iconic look, that's probably the one. I think, at the back of my brain, I also thought that this could be a precursor to the bomber jackets. IIRC, though, I think the Legion of Super-Heroes may have beaten them to the punch in the late 80's. I at least remember Giffen giving everybody shoulder pads and gun holsters. Ugh.
