Friends, friends, friends-- how has it come about that we've had NO DISCUSSION AT ALL on these boards about the new Spidey or X-Men films?? We. . . are not holding true to our roots or to our natures-!
Spidey Reboot 2 has certainly been out long enough that we needn't worry about spoilers, yes? (I will say that, while not a great film, it certainly was good enough to please me. . . and the elements that were good, were very very good.
X-Men:D0FP might want to have another little bit of spoiler-free time, maybe? Or maybe not? (And I really liked this film a lot-- especially 'cause I was all geared to NOT like it. Definitely the best of the films of seen this summer-)
But, the reviews were certainly mixed on both, with some very legitimate criticisms advanced. Whatcha say? Any opinionators care to step forward?

Alas good sir, I cannot comment on that which I have yet to see. Although Spidey 2 can wait till it drops down onto pay-per-view. Nothing against Peter, I thought the first one was decent but these reboot films don't quite have the pull for me to want to brave the crowds and theaters to see it. From what I gather though, having Green Goblin, Rhino, and Electro didn't generate the same problems as having multiple villains did in Raimi's Spider-Man 3. Garfield and Stone's chemistry in their scenes together also seems to be high point of the film as well. Now DOFP is whole another story. I'm hoping to catch a matinee sometime next week. My wife and I are peculiar, rather wait a week or so in seeing any movies, hoping any potential crowds dwindle down some. I've heard nothing but great things about this film, really looking forward to it.

Finally saw X-Men DOFP, wow, WOW! Fantastic movie, certainly the best X-movie released so far. I would rank this film right up there with Cap 2 for being the best comic films to date. There's so much to love about this movie, I don't know where to start. I think McAvoy and Fassbender do an excellent job (both here and in First Class) in adding new layers and dimensions to Xavier and Eric's friendship. They build upon the work started by McKellan and Stewart so seeing all four of them together here is just amazing. Quicksilver was outstanding. His attitude was spot on and his solo fight scene was mind-bending (and the fact he was wearing a Pink Floyd t-shirt made it all that much sweeter). Whedon has a lot to do with his Quicksilver in order to match this performance. They tweaked the basic story some and there were some plot holes but this was also an amazing reboot of the franchise. The end scenes of Logan at the school, the characters present, made me choke up some. It was beautiful. And the end credit scene.....well, definitely looking forward to the next film. Oh, and I hate that I missed spotting Chris Claremont and Len Wein amongst the US senators! This calls for the DVD!

So, Guardians of the Galaxy, teammates? Yeah? Yeah? Surely, SURELY I'm not the only one 'round here who caught it on its opening weekend, now am I?
Major enthusiastic thumbs-up from this eager, willing fan-belly-!

I tried to go HB but I saw a line stretching a mile around the theater. I'll probably go this weekend when things calm down a bit.

I tried to go HB but I saw a line stretching a mile around the theater. I'll probably go this weekend when things calm down a bit. It's good, bobc, it's really good. Very fun, very entertaining, quite satisfying-- and leaves you yearning for the next installment asap. If anything, this is the biggest problem w/ superhero stories as movie serials, as opposed to television. Old, golden age Hollywood could churn out films at a much faster clip for their popular properties and stars (I think there were six Thin Man movies in 10 or 12 years), but it is tough to make quality ginormous blockbusters nowadays in less than three. Unless you just film all possible mayhem at once, and then try to edit it together into different films (like Pirates o/t Carib 2, and then the ab-HORRENT #3!). Even James Bond was showing up for years on at least a bi-yearly schedule like clockwork. The saddest thing in the world is that RDjr is clearly going to age out of being Tony Start before long. . . and man, I don't want him to-! HB

HB, totally agree. The movie was awesome. It's not easy finding the right mix of hokey, campy fun and exciting high stakes action. You have to get somewhere between Fantastic Four and Man of Steel. Guardians did it brilliantly. Can't wait for the sequel. Also, I have to say... I tried to guess what might happen in the tag at the end of the credits. Had several good ideas too, however... none of them were what was there. Not even close.

Lots of Easter Eggs in this movie, too-- HBGirl said the Collector's storeroom contained Jabba the Hut (!!!), although I totally missed him. And how incredibly subtle to have the old Soviet "Space Dog". One assumes it to be the famous, lost "Laika"-- although Laika was a rather different (mixed) breed. But it's a perfect little sentimental gift to older space-race buffs who never got past that poor dog being sent into space on Sputnik 2 w/ no plan to ever bring her back, and let her die in space (horribly, as has been recently revealed). It's a little historical Happy End for a small, sad footnote from the early years of space exploration. HBGirl particularly liked the happy little mixed marriage we see near the end. Again, just an offhand, unforced sweet detail that helps humanize both the story and the "aliens" that populate it. HB

The wife told me that she really didn't want to see Guardians. Most of the time, she's willing to watch the Marvel films, she has basic knowledge of the characters but something about Guardians just seems to turn her off. Of course, I told her, as usual, you don't have to have intimate prior knowledge of the team in order to enjoy the film. So I'm a little surprised and I kinda hate to see it without her.
So I may end up taking my son to go see it or maybe go with my brother to watch it instead.

It took my beloved HBSon to point out to me that I had absurdly misinterpreted the identity of the Collector's dog/artifact. And in the TRUEST of HB-fashion, I totally ran with it, giving it faaaaaar more meaning and significance than it was ever, ever attempting to convey. Ohhhh, how do you folks put up with it? And not a one of you was unkind enough to point out my error-- you are indeed a swell bunch! HB (it's all a soviet plot, y'know. . . )

I STILL haven't got to see G of G movie yet, (nor the new X-men movie).....I live in a resort town, and not only is this a busy time for me (two jobs in summer) , the movie theater here is jam-packed every night.
One thing I HAVE noticed about the hype of G of G is the mentioning of the origins of the 70s team, etc....well, IMHO, the NEW team has VERY little to do with the original line-up. And I still haven't read an article that gives credit to Abnett and Lanning, IMO the creators of the MOVIE Guardians team. ( I haven't picked up the great UK magazine EMPIRE yet, maybe an informed publication like Empire will give Abnett and Lanning credit.)
But nevertheless, I can't wait to see the movie (and X-men DOFP, too). Abnett and Lanning's series remains my favorite "modern" series....and the movie reinforces my frustration that the series was CANCELLED....and the kicker is----that D-bag Bendis got to take over the franchise, and will probably reap the benefits of A&L's creativity.

When I tried collecting new comics back in 2008, DNA's G of G series was one of the very few titles that I really enjoyed. Also, Bendis' Avengers titles were the very first thing I dropped. So, yeah, I'm with you on this.

I've had multiple friends that had no knowledge of the Guardians that have loved the movie. The woman I saw it with had pretty much the same reaction as your wife when she first saw the previews but went to see it anyway because of the tie ins to the other movies. She loved it. From the reviews and comments I've read on line, I haven't seen anyone say anything bad about the movie. Marvel really nailed it with this one.

Scarcity of child care for my little girl has kept me away from the movies, and much else, of late. But I did get to see Guardians.
I know nothing of these characters, never having read the comics. I wasn't enthused to go, since at a glance they are a little further into the absurd than my usual taste. I expected the movie would be another thing I put up with because I love my son and he wanted to go.
I was pleasantly surprised. Though it didn't make me care about any of the characters or about any part of the plot, the humor is so quick, and so constant and so clever that I enjoyed the movie all the way through. It was a new experience. I have never been so completely disinterested and so completely entertained at the same time. I have no idea how they managed it.

Yeah, I've yet to read any negative comments on this film either, at least from the comic geek side of things.
Which I'm glad about. GoG was certainly the biggest risk Marvel Studios had yet to make and it's been a phenomenal success. At this junction, they can hardly do no wrong.

Well, I was finally able to convince the wife to go see GoG. That was a FUN movie!
I was surprised, there was still quite a number of people in the audience, who laughed out loud throughout the whole film, including the wife. I haven't seen that type of reaction in a theater since watching the first Rush Hour film with Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker.
I've never read any of DnA's Guardians (may have to rethink that now) but yeah, the interactions between them was outstanding, the action was frenetic & great and man, one helluva soundtrack. I found myself singing along at some points, what is going on here?!
Certainly the most unique film Marvel has made to date, loved it.

Anybody here enjoys going to the movies alone...? I´ve heard such a creature exists, but I think it´s the stuff cryptozoologist legends are made of... . I personally hate doing that. For me, the best part of watching a movie is commmenting on it once it´s over. Anyway, the soundtrack of the movie just wouldn´t quit on me for weeks afterwards. It kept playing on and on inside my head! But, for once, I didn´t really mind. I loved the movie as well.

Welllllll, Prodigalson (welcome aboard, BTW-- thanks for taking the time to post!), I may be the very cryptid of which you speak. I do rather enjoy the solitary movie-goer experience every so-often. It tends to enhance the feeling of being able to surrender completely to the world of the film for me. What can I say? HB

Welcome to the board Prodigalson! Yeah, it's rare for me to go to any movie by myself. The last movie I went to go see solo was the first X-Files film (which was alright). I find it better to go with someone, that way you can bounce opinions of the film off one another. Though I do have to strike a balance with the wife in the case of Marvel (or any comic) movies. If she has any questions or confusion afterward, I try and answer them without getting into any deep geek knowledge. She likes the films for what they are, good ol' fashioned fun entertainment. I agree also about the GoG soundtrack. I had the Pina Colada song stuck in my head for days. HB, your reason for going solo at the movies is indeed worthy but lest we forget another fine reason for doing so: you don't have to share the popcorn and drink with anyone! Muahahaha!

I really have no problem with going to the movies alone. My first preference is to go with someone who is as enthused as me about the movie, but I would prefer going alone over going with someone who was just there to placate me but isn't really enjoying it.

<<<<SPOILERS for GUARDIANS of the GALAXY movie>>>>>
Okay, I FINALLY saw GUARDIANS.....it was great! A pet peeve of mine for a movie to be truly "classic" is a great opening scene (I always compare to Xmen- 2 scene with Nightcrawler!)....The opening "hospital" scene was just not "doing it" for me....until the last 10 seconds...WOW, now that end of the scene made it all worthwhile!
Also, while I don't really like the "look" of Drax (and he looked under-sized in the promos and definitely the Marvel Legends figure)...the performance by Bautista was EXCELLENT, and he did the character of DRAX justice!
Great parts>>> Drax vs Ronan (I DO NOT like the black face-paint on Ronan, it just looks dumb, IMHO)
I REALLY liked the look for Nebula----so much more interesting visually and as a character, compared to the (IMO) lame Nebula from the 80s Avengers arcs.
Nebula vs Gamora!! Groot was Great! and the best part of the movie---THANOS! (wow, they nailed it there, perfect Thanos!)
I like how Star-Lord has a knowledge of Earth up until @1988----his 80s sayings were right on for anyone my age (I'm 40, btw).
And the handling of Yondu as a character was well done-----very far from the original Yondu, but definitely well acted and interesting in keeping with the story/plot!
The space battles were a little confusing, but in all, a great movie! (Nowhere near as good as Avengers or CaptAM: Winter Soldier, though)
