New member to board so I apologize if this has been covered. I'd like to pick up a copy of the kree/skrull war graphic novel but I'd like it to have glossy pages. I don't care for the paper that feels too much like regular paper and not glossy. The only one my LCS has is kind of an older school non-glossy version.
Anybody know?
Thanks,
Gordon (MiaDog)

Thanks, Gordon (MiaDog) There's an Avengers: Kree-Skrull War hardcover edition on Amazon that gets some pretty solid reviews, and a used copy can be had at a very attractive price-- but I'm not sure about the page-gloss. I have a two-volume "Special Edition" from 1983 (which I can't find at all on MileHigh's database) that reprints #'s 93-97, and does a synopsis of the four issues before that. The pages aren't glossy, but are that much better Baxter paper, with a very attractive, high-end, improved printing process. Fortunately, I have the synopsized issues, but I do think that's a weakness of that particular special edition. You still feel like you've missed the first act of the opera. . . The more recent hardcover sounds like a better possibility. HB

I think I got my copy in 2001 or 2002 (back when trade paperbacks were just starting to become a more regular thing). It was billed as "Marvel's Finest" and had pretty good, glossy paper quality.
Anyone else remember when trade paperbacks were big deal and would often come with commentaries and introductions and special features? I mean, I like having TPBs (especially for harder to find or recent stories), but I do miss the special-ness of TPB.

Paper quality is very good, but it's not glossy like in the more recent books. Perhaps the masterworks?

That one is first-rate, I must say. And yes, I seem to recall a very long intro/interview with. . . Byrne & Claremont, maybe? But of course, comic strip collection books once did the same thing as a rule-- or would have introduction pages penned by other artists. I do miss that feeling of "special-ness" as well. . . HB

Not sure if this is the same edition my AA cohorts are referring to, but here's the cover of the trade I have (which I bought it about 6 years ago). It's a softcover version that has glossy pages, but the colors are not overly-saturated. This is the same one I have, but it's not printed on glossy paper. At least not glossy as in omnibuses, handbooks or more recent trades. It feels pretty porous to me EDIT: oook, apparently there are two trades with nearly identical covers: This is the one I have (note the Marvel Finest logo and the slightly different font in the title compared to Shar's) Possibly they are printed on different quality paper?

HB Was it the PHOENIX SAGA or DARK PHOENIX SAGA? The Dark Phoenix Saga was the first TPB I ever got. I remember trying to save up to buy it when I was 11 or 12, but being so impatient because my $5.00 allowance only came every two weeks! Meaning it would have taken me six weeks to save up to buy it. My Dad eventually caved and agreed to pay for two/thirds of it. I still have that copy. It's beaten up and shows clear signs that I've had it for - GASP! - 19 years! I imagine I'll keep it until it crumbles. Anyways, Shiryu, the Marvel's Finest Kree-Skrull War above is the one I have. I found the pages to be very glossy. I hate that cover, though. It's way too silly. 4 posts in a 24 hour period? How is it possible for me to be doing this? I should be applying for a new job or something . . .

Mine has glossy paper, as mentioned--definitely not newsprint or old-fashioned comic book paper. And mine lacks that fancy "Marvel's Finest" logo ;D that's shown in Shiryu's post. I'm looking at its indicia now, it states "Second Printing July 2001" and the ISBN is 0-7851-0745-2 (which matches the version on the Amazon link I included earlier). The inside cover contains a "Direct Edition" label. I hate that cover, though. It's way too silly. I agree with you; I'm not a huge fan of this cover or its dialogue. Fwiw, Adams says in the volume's introduction that he was asked by Marvel to create a new cover for this collection. And since he'd always wanted one of the K-S installments to be titled "Three Cows Shot Me Down," looks like he got his chance, even if it was decades later! But I guess Marvel really liked his new cover, as it was also used (sans dialogue) for the Essential Avengers Volume #4, at least for the first printing (which is the version I own).
