Heya Teammates- Over on the Bronze Age Babies blog, Dlw used the following DELIGHTFUL image for the August masthead: I was stunned, because the only place I had EVER seen it before was in the English translation of a mid-70's french volume on the History of the Comic Strip-- it was in B&W, and was just a picture w/ a caption mentioning the then-recent surge of "realism" in modern comic books (comic books not being the subject of the book, naturally). I LOVED the image, but never knew where it originally came from. . . and now 40 years later, it pops up out of nowhere. Any ideas? Shar? That magnificent memory of yours have this stored away anywheres? Consensus is that it's pretty definitely Marie Severin (The Thing in particular is almost comically similar to her NOT BRAND ECCH version). . . possibly w/ a bit of help from Herb Trimpe and maybe John Romita. Inclusion of these versions of Subby & Capt. Marvel (and geeze, no Invisible Girl?!?) would seem to likely place it at around 1967 or '68-ish? And I would bet money that Torch & Shellhead are supposed to be supporting some sort of logo. MMMS, maybe? This would make the BEST POSTER EVER. Such a great, inviting snapshot of classic Marvel. . . Anyone? Bueller. . . ? HB

Killing you, isn't it, HB??
The only thing I can add, which might get the ball rolling, is that when I captured the image from the Internet, it was linked to the Encyclopedia Britannica. A regular reader on the BAB confirmed that as a child he had a Britannica that indeed had this image inside.
And I don't think anyone would argue that the art here is indeed by Mirthful Marie Severin. Hmmm -- anyone around here old enough to remember a wonderful thread we had years ago called "Silver Age Artists"?

Hmmm -- anyone around here old enough to remember a wonderful thread we had years ago called "Silver Age Artists"? Doug That was a heck of a thread, wasn't it? Took a bit to track it back down-- it's on the 3rd page of the "GENERAL" topics. Started by, wow, TanaNile (*sniff*- bless her!) back before my time in 2007 (!), and was into it's 21st page by mid-2010. I can't believe it's been idle for that long. Sharkar has some particularly illuminating posts near the end, there, about Rich Buckler's swipe-o-mania. There may be an unduly large amount of rattling on by another verbose board member around that time, though, I must confess. A lot of that guy's stuff you can just bleep over. . . Hey, thanks for the investigative support, Doug-- ;D HB

Invisible Girl's not in that poster? Prove it. OMG, Wundy, I think you're onto something. . . There's an unaccountable gap in the stacking-- next to Ben, above Spidey, below Cap. I think. . . I think THAT'S the Invisible Girl-! Your cool-headed observational skills and reasoning via inference (is inference the word I'm looking for. . . ?) have prevailed once again. Well done! HB

HB You were looking for it to be tricky, so you missed the obvious. She's standing on Hulk's right knee, holding Spider-man's right hand with her left, hanging off to the side and waving with her free hand.

I just discovered this thread. I don't know the origin, but I'll concur that it's pretty awesome. Maybe I'll get a tee shirt made up with it.
