There has been talk of all manner of adaptions. What Silver Age Icons would you like to see brought to the Silver Screen? My first choice would be The Challengers of the Unknown. What say you?

That is a great choice! They're sort of like the Fantastic Four without superpowers. Offhand, the only other Silver Age Icons I can think of I'd like to see in a movie are characters still very much active, and so not as applicable as The Challengers of the Unknown.

The Metal Men or The Doom Patrol would be great. Wow, Metal Men is a particularly inspired choice. CGI strikes me as being the medium they were unknowingly created to be seen in. (Not 3D,though. . . please.) You'd have to have a truly aces story, though-- and cast it with solid, dependable actors as the robots. Could even be kind of a fun little diversion, eh? Who would you cast as each of Doc Magnus' creations? But the story would have to be driven by something other than an external bad-guy threat. I might submit that revisiting the "What is the fundamental nature of being human" well, visited so often and effectively by ST:NG (and others) wouldn't be at all out of line. Never, ever fails to move me. I have a deep, deep fondness for the Doom Patrol-- but they simply would never be viewed by an unknowing public as being anything more than an unfortunate X-Men knockoff. Too bad, really. I could watch me some Cliff Steele action and pathos all DAY-! HB

Greetings HB Casting would depend on if it were made as a comedy or a serious adaption. Doc Magnus - Alec Baldwin/Campbell Scott Mercury - Jim Parsons/Gary Oldman Platinum - Elisha Cuthbert/Kristen Bell Tin - Dj Qualls ( either ) Lead - Matt LeBlanc/Michael Chiklis Iron - Patrick Warburton/Jason Stathem Gold - Joel McHale/...? Nameless - Sarah Silverman ( either )

Nameless - Sarah Silverman ( either ) Say, who is "nameless"? Is that Tin's girlfriend: Tina? I think. . . for a late-night first-shot, I'll go ahead and use first-impression choices, regardless of when the actors came from. Doc Magnus: Hugh Beaumont (Ward Cleaver) Mercury: Jim Carrey Platinum: Evangeline Lilly or Halle Berry Tin: Don Knotts Lead: Michael Chiklis occurred to me too! But also Ernest Borgnine Iron: John Wayne or Woody Strode Gold: Someone ridiculously good-looking and buff, like Chris Hemsworth or Hugh Jackman Tina: Amanda Plummer Gotta call it a night, w/ that! HB (later addition for Tina: Janine Duvitski, who played "Jane" on the BBC series "Waiting for God"-- anyone familiar w/ the show will know exactly the quality I'm referring to. . . HB)

Very nice cast ;D I am not remembering my comics quite rightly...Nameless is indeed Tin's girlfriend...but I thought that Tina was a name that Platinum had took on for a short time. My apologies.

PS...Ernest Borgnine is excellent choice. How odd that the name is Borgnine....like Star Trek's Annika is a Borg...Seven of Nine...idk. Kinda like Dick Sargent/Dick York- Bewitched...Sergent York. idk... Be well!

No apologies necessary, pym--you are correct! - Nameless is Tin's girlfriend, as you said. She came on board a few issues after the comic debuted. - Tina is Platinum. She preferred to be addressed as Tina instead of by her metal name, probably to seem more human in her beloved Doc's eyes. Great casting suggestions, btw. And I think I've read that Andru/Esposito did indeed base Lead's visage on Borgnine.

Gosh, it's been so long since I've read any of the old Metal Men series. And of course "Tina" would be the diminutive of "PlaTINum"-- I think I might even remember being kind of confused by that when I was a very little kid (Metal Men were among the first comics I was picking up and actually reading the words in--like in first or second grade. ;D) . Heh-- figures I'd forget that a character's name was "Nameless". . . HB

But I loved that comic and it certainly helped me with my periodic table homework! ;D

[Great casting suggestions, btw. And I think I've read that Andru/Esposito did indeed base Lead's visage on Borgnine. Boy, give those two old guys an exalt for accuracy then, eh? 'Cause now I TOTALLY see Borgnine's face in ol' Lead-! Gosh, and he still could have been tapped to do the role up until his death very recently. . . The actor I couldn't bring to mind for Gold was Rock Hudson! The face was there, and I couldn't get the name. And Jane Duvitski would be for Nameless, then, of course. And now the whole idea of a Metal Men screen treatment has really lodged in my brain. But. . . I daresay it would work MUCH better as a TV series. Perhaps more like a limited, finite series (BBC style) than one that remains perpetually open-ended. And it would have to have a loving, respectful, firm hand at the writer/creator/producer helm. Joss Whedon, JJ Abrams, and Sam Raimi would be my first three choices. But the basic scenario is inherently packed w/ thematic questions that I never tire of seeing explored-- questions about defining sentience, self, the basic level of being "human"; questions about defining loyalty, and individual rights and responsibilities; of the nature of love & friendship, of course; of trust and the internal processes of betrayal. We've been seeing it since METROPOLIS, really, and have seen it done well w/ Mr. Data (and his brother and daughter), and all of the unexpectedly self-aware holo-folks on the holodeck on Next Generation. And with all of the "artificial humans" in the Alien franchise (particularly riveting was Michael Fassbinder in the questionable PROMETHEUS). And with the Vision, naturally, and especially Jocasta. And with pretty much half the cast of thousands in Tad Williams' "Otherland" epic. (A fantasticly engaging series that I can't recommend enough-) The convention is broadly applied over many genres and hit upon a lot---BUT, I feel like a Metal Men TV series would actually be the perfect venue to laser in on a lot of those thematic issues and topics in one self-contained continuing series environment. And of course there would ALWAYS be plenty o' behind-whoopin' action to ensure the requisite fun-factor. *sigh* Well, there you have it. METAL MEN is now my favorite show on television (okay, maybe still #2 behind FIREFLY)-- unfortunately, it doesn't exist. . . Daggone it-- HB

As a sort of companion post to the Classic Book Club thread…who would you cast as your favorite Defenders in a major motion picture?
