I was just speculating about Offspring. It would make some sense too because even though Bart seems lighthearted he's hiding a secret that the future is a wasteland; Dick is now the more serious Nightwing, and Tim Drake is a more thoughtful Robin. I like how they are using more recent characters (Connor and Bart have been around for about twenty years, but still.) Miss Martian, Wonder Girl that isn't Donna Troy, Lagoon Boy, etc. I like Cyborg, Raven, and all them, but they were done so well in the TT series it seems redundant to feature them in YJ.
I'd really like to see Firestorm or the Ray in YJ; they are both younger characters that would fit in quite well. Firestorm would be especially interesting because he'd be bit like Captain Marvel in reverse, part of him is the mature man, Martin Stein, and the dominant component is Ronnie Raymond. So he'd see being on YJ instead of JLA as being stuck at the kid's table and perhaps he'd be very brash and keep trying to prove himself, with not so good results. They'd probably use the Jason Rusch version though, and even though I read all those comics and wanted to like him it just felt weird. Plus they kept changing who he bonded with and his powers all while fighting original Firestorm's enemies. It just seemed pointless to have a new guy. Jamie Reyes is very different from Ted Kord, Connor Hawke is very different from Oliver Queen, Kyle Rayner was different from Hal Jordan, etc. The new Firestorm was kind of like when they tried to replace Aquaman with a younger guy. Why bother reading it? Why bother publishing it?

I replied already, but I guess it didn't take. I was just speculating on Offspring; I have exactly zero evidence he'll show up/ join the team/whatever, but it would be a neat thing to do, and given that a lot of recent iterations or new heroes seem to be popping up it would be fun to see. Plastic Man seems to be a character people either love or hate. I seem him as essentially the Bugs Bunny of the DCU, and Tom Kenny (Spongebob Squarepants) was great at voicing Plas on the Brave and the Bold.
Anyway, aside from Beast Boy and Impulse who is only pretending to be lighthearted there isn't really a sunny character on YJ. I do like all the classic Titans but the TT series kinda said it all and I'd like to see some new blood. I still can't figure out why Barbara Gordon or Zatanna are on the team, but maybe I'm the only one who finds them boring. I'd much rather see Bombshell, the Ray, or Firestorm on the team. Kid Devil might be fun if they can say devil on tv and not get angry letters. I'd also like if maybe there was a flashback episode focusing on Jason Todd as Robin, not that that will ever happen.

Actually, I wouldn't mind Captain Marvel jr., but since Captain Marvel already gets a lot of airtime, I would say that's not happening. I like the Ronnie Raymond Firestorm, I'm not at all familiar with the Jason Rusch Firestorm, though I know he exists. I do think Ronnie Raymond's dual personality makes him very interesting. As far as lighthearded characters, M'gan used to be lighthearted, but they've made her more serious, too. I do think the team needs at least one goofball. Kid Devil would be a good addition. Hopefully Garfield will be around to help lighten things up, anyway.

Captain Marvel Jr is a great idea. Heck, the biggest problem is the Marvel families' name problems. Maybe they could portray him as a young Elvis Presley, since Elvis took CMJ as inspiration for his stage appearance. They did a version of the Jason Rusch Firestorm on the Brave and the Bold and it was actually pretty good; science prodigy Jason was bonded with doofus gym coach Ronnie Raymond in a a reversal of the original Firestorm. Unfortunately the comic version was nowhere near as good.
Although it's maybe too close to Impulse, I'd dig seeing Booster Gold on the JLA. His sole appearance on JLU "the Greatest Story Never Told" was fantastic and his second series was just an all-around game changer. He's essentially the most important person ever, but he can't tell anyone because it would endanger his life and the timestream. He starts the Time Masters but has to pretend to be inept so he can save lives quietly.
I was thinking they could have Etrigan show up at some point and that would be a perfect story to introduce Blue Devil and Kid Devil.

Good point about Elvis. I thought he patterned his haircut after CMS, though, but I could be misremembering.
I love the Brave & Bold series, but I missed the one with Firestorm.
I can't picture Booster Gold without Ted Kord. It's like Fire & Ice.
Etrigan, I like that idea. Maybe they'd need to stick Blue Devil into the JLA so that Kid Devil could be introduced into YJ.

ultron69 Elvis was a huge CMJ fan. Remember at one point Captain Marvel was bigger than Superman. But the hairstyle and half cape and sometimes sash Elvis wore was directly based on CMJ. Briefly in the Teen Titans comics they revealed CMJ was a huge Elvis fan, nicely turning the whole thing around. In Kingdom Come CMJ grew up to be King Marvel, and his wife looked like Priscilla and his son looked like a young Elvis. I miss Brave and Bold, it was just so random. I always hoped they'd bring in Animal Man, but they did such a fantastic job with Aquaman, so I'm good. I do see your point on Blue Beetle; I like Jaime Reyes but to me he's too much like the Guyver, a bio-mechanical suit that can essentially do everything. I think most people saw Ted Kord as the not cool Batman but there was a certain charm there; he was the nice guy who finished last, exactly because he's a nice guy. A few years back he was trying to woo Barbara Gordon and she considered it and then ditched him for Nightwing, who had broken up with her four times or so. Or the storyline where he was killed, where he thought there was a super villain plot and everyone just ignored him. DC didn't know what to do with Kord so they just killed him. He was a great foil for Booster Gold and the fact that people remember a fictional friendship years later means the writing spoke to them. But maybe it was kinda the kick in the pants Booster needed to get serious with his life. Since DC rebooted yet again we'll never know. I think BG is Canadian now (originally he was from Gotham and relocated to Metropolis to show up Superman) and he's boring now too. I was thinking maybe Satannish (I don't think they can say that on TV) or Neron opens a gate to hell or whatever and Etrigan pops out, ruins the day in a clever, underhanded way and meanwhile two humans are merged with demons to make Blue Devil and Kid Devil. I'd also like to see Aztek. Man, that was a fun comic.

Thanks for clarifying the Elvis thing, drew. I had seen that factoid on an Elvis documentary a few years ago, but my memory sucks.
Animal Man on B&B would be crazy fun. They should then have him talking to the audience. :-) Actually, I think Aquaman should have appeared in every episode. I like Jaime on YJ. I think it's funny the way he argues with his suit. You're right that he's a lot like that sci-fi classic (ironic humor here) the Guyver though.
Since you're talking about all of the problems DC saddled Ted Kord with, I seem to remember he also had heart problems (somewhere in the 90's, I think) and Booster teased him about that. Didn't they bring Ted back with the Justice League Generation Lost series? I have to admit, I was never a big Ted fan, though I did enjoy him with Booster, but making him more boring is definitely not the way to go. Maybe DC doesn't want him showing up Jaime?
I like your idea for introducing the Devils. I'm not very familiar with Aztek, my only knowledge of him comes from the JLA Rock of Ages and World War III TPB's.

ultron69 No bother, I just wish DC would get themselves sorted out. You are right Animal Man on B&B would have been fun, but they went with Bat-Mite and B'wana Beast instead, and it turned out pretty well. I wish B&B was still on. Diedrich Bader did a fantastic job as Batman, and it seemed like he was having fun doing it. No disrespect to Kevin Conroy or Bruce Greenwood, but the voice casting for the show's tone was perfect. You are correct, DC wanted to shoe in Jaime as Blue Beetle, so they highlighted all of Ted's faults and none of his triumphs. They used his comedic past as an excuse to kill him. Because he was sometimes silly he wasn't relevant anymore. I'm not saying their were a lot of TK fans, but he could have retired instead of being shot in the face. Speaking of characters I want back, another Ditko creation the Question would be welcome in the Justice League/Young Justice as a liason. YJ is already the covert arm of the JLA, so it would sense they have a contact feeding them info. I want to see Vic Sage or even Wesley Dodds being a behind the scenes mystery man. As for Aztek, the comic ran for about 12-15 issues, dealt with a young warrior monk abruptly forced to live in a big city, deal with being a super-hero and a doctor, and try to stave off an impending apocalypse, while trying to figure out how people work. It was pretty good.

I wonder why they never let someone retire, they simply have to kill him. It would be so easy, at least for someone who doesn't have his own title, to simply have them fade off in the sunset, and just not have stories with them anymore. They just can't do that nowadays, though. Everything has to be about shock value.
I loved the Question in the Justice League cartoon. A bit of a faceless Mulder.
Aztek does sound pretty good, especially the part about him trying to figure people out. I'm still trying to do that myself.

Wow, also DC Nation is off to a great start this season. I am surprised that I even liked the Green Lantern episode better than YJ. I love Guy Gardner, so that had something to do with it. I was wondering (since this is an Avengers board) when the Manhunters scanned the people and said "emotions detected" what would they have found if they scanned the Vision? YJ was very good, though, and while I thought maybe Lex had Roy's arm in that suitcase, I think I like this better, and the codename Arsenal now makes a lot of sense.
Drew - you didn't get GL? The episode was titled "The New Guy" and, as I alluded to in the previous paragraph, had Guy in it. Great episode, a lot of fun. Maybe you can catch it in the internet if you've missed it on TV, or maybe they will replay it soon.

I saw a clip of GL where Guy is acting snotty towards Hal, but for some reason it failed to record.
I'm downloading it right now.
Actually the part of YJ that concerned me was when Red Arrow pointed out they took his arm to make unlimited clones. And man seeing Roy in action was awesome. I had some idea where they were going with the episode, but once Lex commented on his arsenal it fell into place. It's a neat solution; in the comics they couldn't decide what exactly to do with Roy. He was in Checkmate and used a pistol and crossbow, he wore that horrible purple outfit and used a variety of weapons, they put him in a better red outfit and basically said he has a mastery of all weapons but especially projectiles, then he was in a red GA suit -all the while he went under Arsenal. He ditches the red suit, gets a new one, is asked to join one of the crappier versions of the JLA, and they start calling him Red Arrow. Then the basically make him a crazed junkie and cut off his arm, only to give him a robot arm. YJ just simplified all that nonsense. Writing for animation must be easier than comics because if you are writing about an established character you have a pool of stories you can adapt, modify, whatever. Three things intrigued me: who is Rocket getting married to, Sportsmaster and Cheshire vowing vengeance, and the shrine to the fallen heroes.

I just watched the new GL and it was great! That robot at the beginning was voiced by Tom Kane (Ultron) I'm almost certain. The wing joint they went to was named after the late Dwayne McDuffie, which was nice. I expect we'll soon see Joe Kubert's name start to appear in animation. I liked how they remembered Guy played football for Michigan, if they can get the little things right they are more likely to get the big things right. A very encouraging start. I also liked how everyone loves Guy and he just basks in it. Diedrich Bader was a very good choice.
About YJ, in the shrine of heroes there was Ted Kord memorial and a Robin one, which I'm assuming is Jason Todd. At least he was acknowledged as having existed for once. Did all those guys die in the five year span? That would be depressing.

I meant to mention how great it was seeing Roy in action. Very resourceful. You're right about animation. There isn't some huge, clutered, universe full of convoluted and confusing histories to worry about. You can start with a clean slate and take some of the best ideas from the various comic versions and hopefully even improve upon them a little bit. Yes, those three things you mention bear watcing, Drew. I am wondering about some of the statues in that shrine myself. I wonder if they'll ever get around to filling us in.
I didn't notice about the wing joint named after Dwayne McDuffie in GL. That is great.

Did all those guys die in the five year span? That would be depressing. So was that Jason Todd? I was beginning to wonder if Tim died during the break. It would be so sweet to see Ted Kord in action especially if Jaime continues to learn about his namesake predecessor. Yay! Bart is still around! The fight between Roy and Mercy was very well done, in fact, it shows Roy is just as crafty as Dick. Taking on the identity of Arsenal was great indeed, can't wait to see more of him in action. I'm something of a late-comer to YJ, missing over half the first season, but been watching all of Invasion. So, can anyone tell me who the girl was talking to Superboy in Ivy Town about his birthday? Don't think I caught her name and out of costume, I have no idea who she is. GL was fun too. Really enjoyed the first season, more excited over the cartoon GL than for Johns' comic actually (long rant over why). Guy was terrific. Although I think it's funny that in the comic, it's Guy who is part of the Honor Guard yet here it's Hal who gets promoted. I hope this doesn't mean we won't see any more of Aia and Razor. I really liked their relationship as it developed last season and would love to see more of them.

If it was Jason, he was Robin very briefly. Assuming an accelerated training program, maybe three years. You have to also allow some time for Tim to train. Ted Kord could have been BB for years but just not part of the league. The girl SB was talking to was Wendy, part of the old Superfriends cartoons. Her, her brother Marvin, and a dog with a cape named Wonderdog were non powered sidekicks and dubious comedic relief. They are trying to take a crappy idea and make it somewhat useful.
The GL series is surprisingly good, and you're right about the honor guard outfit. I'd guess it was given to Guy prematurely just based on how the Guardians fawn over him. Hal being promoted is surely a sign we'll see Aia, Razor and Kilowog and probably not seeing earth very much.

Something I never understood was why Jason Todd was always seen as the failure Robin. He was a little headstrong, a little brash, perhaps a bit too violent, but isn't that kind of a mix between Batman and Dick Grayson? Tim is actually a pretty interesting Robin in the comics but in YJ he does almost nothing. To clarify, I'm talking about comics before the latest reboot. Sure the Joker killed Jason but he was trying to protect his mother from being murdered. So the still alive Barbara Gordon is a martyr and Jason is the cautionary tale? It never seemed fair.
As I see it Jason is probably the closest character to Bruce Wayne there is. Anger, grief, a sense of loss, and a grim determination for justice were shared commodities. Yes Jason took it a bit far but he was a teenager while Bruce didn't start being Batman until 25 or so. Age calms people. So Dick, Tim, Damien are all good Robins while Jason is a dud because he has personal issues he's working through? That's crappy storytelling imo. I actually liked seeing him return as the Red Hood, but I'd hoped he'd be Red Robin and return to the fold. It's all moot now but perhaps YJ, reflecting on the Roy storyline will pull off something interesting with Jason.
@marvel boy The only time I'm aware of Ted Kord in animation was in Batman the Brave and the Bold. If you've dismissed it as being silly or juvenile than you are missing out. Sure, some episodes are silly, but some are more serious and all are entertaining. You'll see the best Aquaman ever and the death of Ted in "Fall of the Blue Beetle!" Wil Wheaton voices Ted BTW.

Marvel Boy, I'm not sure who the girl was. Was it Wendy? I'm sure Drew can help us out here. I got the impression she wasn't a superhero, though since it seemed like she didn't know his identity.
Could it be you're not excited over the Johns comic because you like character driven stories more than a bunch of action? I like his GL stuff, but I don't love it. It seems like Guy got promoted so that they could more or less keep Hal's status quo as earth's Green Lantern, and it probably makes it easier to not have Guy appear as often, since I imagine DC wants Hal to be the main GL.

Wendy eh? Yeah, I remember her, Marvin, and Wonder Dog from Superfriends. (Actually liked them better than Zan and Jayna). I think Johns tried using them again late into his run on Teen Titans. Odd to see her back though. Had she appeared in any previous episodes? Something I never understood was why Jason Todd was always seen as the failure Robin. He was a little headstrong, a little brash, perhaps a bit too violent, but isn't that kind of a mix between Batman and Dick Grayson? Two reasons, I think, for this perception of Jason Todd. First, coming from the psychoanalysis that seems mandatory for Batman these days, Robin is viewed as being an anchor of light and sanity for Bruce to keep his darker moods in check. Without a Robin, Bruce may edge closer and closer to manic obsession and lose sight of what is important and necessary. Jason Todd, due to his own personal issues and demons, didn't fit into that Robin mold very well. Second, Todd is unique in comic history in that the fans themselves voted on his fate. If memory serves, DC Editorial felt that Jason as a character wasn't a good Robin, but gave the ultimate choice of his fate to the fans who then voted to have him die during Death in the Family. So, he's considered a failure because the fans wanted him to die. I liked his return as Red Hood, I thought Winick handled that very well and added another level of tragedy for Batman. The fans may have considered him a failure, but in story, Todd was a failure for Bruce and to see him return, in that matter, made for some very good stories. Oh no, not evil Wil Wheaton! I've seen very little of B&B, thinking that it did stray too much into Silver Age silliness. But I've also read and heard of too many good reviews (like you mention here) to totally dismiss it, so I'll check it out. As for Johns and GL, it's a little complicated. If you go with the idea of DC's Trinity, then Johns has done more than his fair share of lofting Hal and the Corps onto that pedestal as well. My problems began with Blackest Night and the other Corps. I thought their reveal overall was handled poorly and too quickly, the violence quotient of the book became too excessive for me (Sorry, but I don't want a full page spread of Black Hand committing suicide by blowing his brains out in full gory detail) and the event story just didn't interest me at all (Not a huge zombie fan) I love the way the cartoon handled the other Corps better. The slow reveal of the history of the Red Lanterns, learning of the Star Sapp- sorry Violet Lanterns, the potential of Yellow Lanterns through the yellow fear minerals, and the terrific build-up of Saint Walker, with Mogo's and Ganthet's help, as a Blue Lantern. Much better than Johns going, "Here is every other single Lantern Corps, right here, right now. Enjoy!" Yeah, right.

If it was indeed Wendy, then yes, she and Marvin did appear in two previous episodes. I, too preferred them to Zan and Jayna in Superfriends.
As far as Johns, while I do like his GL stuff, the whole "other Corps" stuff did drag on for quite a while, and yeah, I'm not a huge zombie fan either. Vampires are way better!
And I do love B&B. There is Silver Age silliness, but I think it's well done and a nice balance is kept between telling a superhero action story while adding some goofiness. If you want to talk silliness, how about the Superhero Squad?

I liked Johns at first Stars and STRIPE was great, he helped revive the JSA, he brought back GL and made it interesting, and his Flash comics were phenomenal. It was once he was put in charge things started to go downhill. If I'm not mistaken he also did some work on the Teen Titans which was pretty good.
One of my favorite episodes of B&B was the Bat-Mite one. That monologue hit the nail on the head. Chill of the Night! was very good, as was the one where Aquaman is forced to take a vacation with his family on land in an RV, except he keeps sneaking away to be heroic. My favorite though was Long Arm of the Law!, featuring the vengeance of Kite-Man against Plastic Man that was just priceless.

I know this is off topic, but I don't know how often anyone checks the DC General Topics board. I have a question, if anyone is into the Legion of Super-Heroes. I've recently picked up the last TPB before the New 52, and the first TPB of the New 52, and I see that Luornu is now Duplicate Damsel and can split into who knows how many selves. The last I knew in the Levitz continuity (which I think is more or less what the current Legion is) she was down to her last self, with the Time Trapper killing her second body in the 80's Baxter series. So, whahappen? How'd she get this new power, or is this the Luornu from the Waid continuity?

Post by drew on Oct 2, 2012 13:13:56 GMT -5
ultron69 I have no idea. If I understand correctly just from what you wrote, Luornu is Duplicate Damsel which used to mean there were only two of her because the third part of her was killed by Computo but now she can actually "duplicate" herself like Multiple Man? If so, that is a very interesting take on a very dumb code name. I really don't want to get back into the Legion again because they keep changing it! I've read comics for roughly 20 years and if I can't figure out what is going on how on Earth is a new reader going to? Marvel is messed up too, but they don't call do over every few years. Is Superboy in the Legion again? Because I thought Mon-el, M'onel, or Valor or whatever was a perfectly acceptable substitute. Andromeda was a good sub for Supergirl as well. Add in Daxamite lead weakness and in one series Andromeda's racism (specieism? and Valor being essentially the giver of life as the seeder of worlds and worshipped were far more interesting that Clark and whoever Supergirl is these days.

Johns re-started the Teen Titans with Mike McKone. I think he ended up writing about 50, maybe 60 issues of the title. Could be off with that number though.
I liked his work on JSA but my favorite Johns work is his run on Hawkman with Rags Morales. Really great stuff there.
As for the Legion..........*deep breath* here goes.
The Waid Legion had Triplicate Girl, they never fought Computo, so I don't think she ever lost a body. If you are reading the New 52 Legion, then yes, you are reading the original[/i] Legion, usually called the Levitz Legion to distinguish these from the other versions of the Legion.
So, Luorno should still be Duo Damsel although I didn't know Time Trapper killed her second body. Could be that incident was forgotten or overlooked since this version of the team hasn't been seen for over 20 years.
Superboy is still with this Legion albeit in a different way. Instead of Superboy flying around both the future and current DCU, it's only in the future with the Legion that Clark is Superboy, never in the present.
They also changed the inspiration of the Legion. Instead of just Superboy/Superman, the Legion was inspired by all the heroes of the present-day DCU.
Anyone remember the Superboy and LOSH cartoon from a few years ago? I liked that as well.
Can't watch the Superhero Squad show although I do like the figures. Those are cool.

I forgot about Hawkman. Excellent comic. I wonder what Mr. Morales is working on these days? He also did a fine job on Hourman.
It's sad there are so many versions of the Lsh. I personally liked the late '90's version of Legion/Leggionnaires thanks in no small part by them stripping away the goofy stuff. It was a fresh start with clever nods to the past. In one issue they were thrown back into 1950's America and were all in an art class with one Mr. Swan. Good stuff. The artwork was very good, the costumes were clean and uncluttered, and the code names were tightened up.
The LOSH cartoon was pretty good, I just hated the lack of the core trio. Cosmic Boy showed up what, twice? I didn't like Superboy X or whatever he was called and why was Bouncing Boy such a focus? I liked their take on Brainiac 5, but he's not supposed to be likeable. Throw in a lack of most of my favorite characters and I was just whelmed. The Booster Gold cameo in episode 1 was pretty cool though.
Does anyone else plan to check out the Green Arrow tv show? Apparently Merlyn, Deathstroke, and a version of Speedy will be on there. I'm of two minds about it, but I'll give it a shot.

Marvel Boy, I am reading the New 52 (along with the iteration immediately before it). So, if it's the original, Levitz Luornu, then she should only have one life. My understanding was that Levitz was picking up the continuity with the end of Magic Wars (which ended the Legion's Baxter series, at #63) and Luornu had her second body killed by the Time Trapper well before that, I believe it was in #50. So, somehow she got her powers increased apparently, but I don't know how. I had read a little of the Waid Legion and I thought that Luornu in that one could make far more than three bodies, so I was wondering if this was that Luornu.
Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed the LOSH cartoon and was sad when it was cancelled after just two seasons. The odd thing about that cartoon though was how different seasons one and two were from each other in tone. Season one was much lighter, and also a bunch of one and two parters, whereas season two was darker, and was basically a continuing story.
Drew, I hadn't heard about a Green Arrow TV show, but I will definitely be on the lookout for it.
