Mostly positive??? Cripes...at 95% right now at RT.
Here is a hint for my fellow Avenger fans here.
I was at Walmart today and they had the Earth's Mightiest Heroes DVDs on sale for $10 each. The bonus was that with each DVD (4 total of course), you also receive a free movie ticket.
So, I will received 4 movies tickets for Friday night AND the complete season 1 of EMH for a grand total of $40. Not too shabby.
If you don't have the DVDs yet, I'd check it out.

This isn't a review (yet) of course, but I just wanted to share why I am so excited about this movie. Growing up (I am mid 40's), it was always so disappointing to see the way that super-heroes were presented in the mainstream media. We had shows like "The Incredible Hulk", which involved Hulk doing things like lifting cars and throwing boulders. Where were the super villains? Where the classic super hero brawls?
We had cartoons like Spider Man, which featured bad animation and again, lacked that comic book feel.
We had the live action Batman show, which featured skinny dudes in spandex tights with predictable storylines.
When comic characters moved into the movies in flicks like Superman or the Michael Keaton Batman, again, there was that reluctance to go "all in" with what supers meant to me.
In modern times, as much as I enjoyed the modern X-men or Spidey or Iron Man films, they still were not the over the top action that I desired. Battles were typically brief, 1 x 1, and lacked the spectacle nature of comic books. I didn't want to see a quick Iron Man-Iron Monger battle at the end of the film. I wanted a battle royale.
The Avengers, aside from being my favorite comic, is the first film that I believe will truly capture my era of comics. I want to see Hulk bashing things in mid-flight. I want to see Cap and Thor back to back beating the crap out of aliens. I want to see the team dynamics between Hawkeye and Widow and Stark, and by all the early word, THIS is the move that really captures the essence of what comic books of my era are about. I never for a second I believed i would ever see these characters on the movie screen, let alone in a manner that truly respected the source material without making a ton of compromises for the non-comic fan.
I can't wait until next Friday.

I watched Avengers Assemble last night. And I thought it was stunning.
Any preconceptions that I had were surpassed and then some.
I thought the film had a great cast; had some genuine surprises; some great action sequences; moments of humour that had the whole cinema laughing - two key moments with Hulk were hilarious (and intentionally so!); and most of all - it felt 'right' and it 'worked'.
Every character had their moments to shine, and in allocating Joss Whedon to writing and directing duties I think he proved himself a very capable director within this genre, but much more importantly, all of the dialogue felt unique to the characters in question: lines by Tony Stark/Iron Man, Steve Rogers/Captain America, Thor et al all felt true to the previously established Marvel Cinematic Universe interpretations and continuity.
It is a big movie. yes at two and half hours is the longest of the Marvel movies. It is not the longest super-hero movie (Watchmen probably), nor the most narratively dense (again Watchmen I believe, or possibly The Dark Knight), but it was a packed film. There is a little sagging in the middle which was more to do with positioning characters and characterisations, but in all I would rank this as one of my favourite super-hero movies of all time.
Thinking about the list that would probably include The Dark Knight (Avengers does not over-run as I feel TDK did), X-Men 2 (which starts amazingly and never quite lives up to that opening scene again in terms of action - Avengers builds better), Spider-man 2 (Avengers wins in scale, Spider-man 2 in evenness of tone), The Incredibles (I think The Incredibles has the similar problem of sagging a little, but also mixes too much spy-fi into the mix at the expense of spectacle - Avengers has an amazing array of spectacle). On balance Avengers is so strong in so many areas that it may be the contender. That said, I will be very curious to listen to Mark Kermode's review today on BBC 5 Live.
And to anyone going to see it - do, do, stay for the couple of minutes necessary after the initial post-film credits - it is worth it for anyone with some Marvel knowledge.
Possibly my favourite super-hero film ever. I want to see this again - NOW!

This is great news. I hope the movie appeals to a lot of people and actually makes some money. Last year's superhero movies didn't do very well.

It's also out in Italy. I haven't watched it yet, but everybody who has has given great reviews, even people who don't usually read or know comic books. They especially praised the humor and character interaction.
Can't wait to watch it myself!!

P-Citizen, I'm giving you an exalt for a superb job of discussing and recommending the film and yet not ever carelessly slipping into spoiler territory. That's a tough assignment, but you've handled it masterfully. You've aptly conveyed exactly why you think this is a great film, and why I'm likely to enjoy it, and yet never had to tell us exactly what happens in it. Hmm. Are any of our happy band here the types who've been known to sit through a second showing of a film at the local multiplex, even though they've only purchased the one ticket? I haven't been tempted to do that since, no kidding, Raiders of the Lost Ark. . . er. . . how closely do theater managers monitor that sort of thing. . . ? (And am I losing my moral compass-??) HB

Cheers HB, very kind. And yes, I was trying to avoid spoiler-y-ness. Thankfully the trailers i had seen did not include some of the jaw-dropping moments that the film has. This movie is so worthwhile seeing. If you had asked me even with the release of Iron Man could I expect an Avengers film of this quality, I would have been dubious, but this was just superb.

On a side-note, Pulpster & Shiryu-- man, what the heck gives?!? The film's getting released in Europe BEFORE it's released over here on this side of the pond?? Michidiers, is it showing over there in Germany, too? *sigh* An American film based solely on a particularly American entertainment medium-- and it gets exported away, right off the bat! Daggone global economy. . . . HB

POSSIBLE SPOILERS!!!
NO REALLY!! SPOILERS!!!
Great film. My favourite superhero film so far. Not perfect, but what is? This is a good, no, a great film for Avengers fans. Lots of action, good character stuff, and some very funny moments. But more than that, it had moments that were just awesome, which really no other superhero film has had for me, (despite my liking some of them a fair bit). For a comics fan, for an Avengers fan, its full of really cool moments. Better than I expected, and I expect a lot of Whedon. If in doubt, I'd recommend seeing it. 4 3/4 stars out of 5

I just watched it. Wonderful, wonderful film, best superhero flick ever IMO.
Action, characterization, character interaction and dialogue was top notch. Heroism, comedy, drama, tears, battles... this movie has it all. Like others have said, I was expecting a lot, but this was even better.
The best thing I can say is that it's really like a comic book story, in the best sense of the word.
PS: HB, as a Hulk fan, you will love this.

Oooooh baby-- that's what my Hulk-Legitimacy Sense has been preliminarily indicating, Shir, based solely on the little nuggets of trailers & what-not! I'll go out on a limb, and say that much like EMH, it looks like Joss Whedon "gets" the optimal way to use the Hulk in a team environment (which, ironically, the Avengers never really had much success with in the original MU-- issue #100 being maybe the only positive example). And I know I sound like a hopeless, middle-aged fanboy. . . but the words you're using in your accolades? Pretty much the same kind of praise Whedon garnered for Buffy, Angel, and Firefly. Whoever had the insight to put him at the head of one of the biggest summer film projects EVER also deserves a pat on the back from fandom, I'm thinkin'. . . ! GRARGH! How can we still be waiting till Friday in this hemisphere?? Are we in some daggone alternate reality??? HB (modified for grammar-- yikes!)

What's great is that everyone gets to shine, and not necessarily in the ways you might expect. Whedon and co. did a wonderful job, and the only way it could have been better for me is if everyone was in comic-book faithful costumes (hey, Spider-man, Superman and Batman have had very close movie/comic match-ups, that's all I want for Avengers). It'll be worth the wait HB.

By the way, do remain for the extra scene after the initial credits, it's totally worth it!
And, speaking of that, there is a persistent rumor about another extra scene, filmed after the preview and placed at the very end of the credits, where one beloved character gets introduced (or at least hinted at). This scene is sadly not present in the European version of the movie, but it might - or might not - be in the American one (according to some sources, it's the reason for the delay). If anyone has 10 minutes to spare after watching the film, check it out

Okay, I totally know who I would choose to introduce in that manner, although I can think of at least three likely contenders. (Wait-- make that four. No. . .six.) Aaaand? What did you think, Shar? Loved it!!! Oh sure, I have some very minor quibbles about pacing but overall it's a comic book fan's dream movie. I was absolutely drawn into the world of the movie and the characters, and judging from the audience's exuberant reaction, so was everyone else. There were some really impressive action sequences. The actors were all pretty good, especially Robert Downey Jr.--he was excellent, with the best lines (no surprise there), Tom Hiddleston and Mark Ruffalo. I also liked Chris Evans a lot, even though as has been mentioned on this board a while ago, the Cap costume--especially the mask/headpiece--is an eyesore.

Everyone I spoke to said the audience actively laughed or even clapped their hands at times, and several people are already talking about going to watch it again. It really looks like Marvel has hit the jackpot this time. Was there any additional scene after the end credits at your screening?

Was there any additional scene after the end credits at your screening? Apart from the appearance of you-know-who , there was no additional scene. But I've heard through the grapevine that the extra scene you're referring to will be added once the film goes into general release this Friday. We'll see...

Great flick ( I saw it in the UK this weekend). I would have to say- favorite comic movie of all time (especially since I liked the comics back in the 70's). My teenagers also really liked it. The only thing I have to mention is that although Tony Stark's character was funny, it was just a bit too much for me. Everything was a wise-cracking joke. It never stopped. Even so, this was .5 % deduction, leaving a score of 99.5% for this incredible movie. I also kind of wanted more dominance by Thor, but that's my own bias cause he was my favorite guy from the comics. GO SEE IT!!!!
