Does anybody here know if it was Stan Lee who came up with Ben Grimm´s battle cry or if it was the invention of a later scribe of the FF?

It could also have been Kirby, but Lee seems a reasonable bet.

It certainly had to be Stan doing the writing when it was introduced, as it's used on the old Fantastic Four cartoon, and all of those episodes were based on Lee/Kirby issues. Paul Frees did a particularly great Ben Grimm--- his is the voice I still hear in my head when I read Ben's words. HB

I decided to thumb through my Essentials. I won't swear that this was the first appearance of the phrase but Ben did say it on page 15 of issue #22 against the Mole Man. Still well into the Stan Lee years.

I'm confident that it's a Stan Lee invention. It has a very Stan Lee-vibe to it (along with "Excelsior!" and my personal favorite, "'Nuff Said")

Still well into the Stan Lee years. That's right, the first time Ben utters it is (surprisingly) not until a couple of years into the FF's run, in #22 (incidentally the issue in which Sue's new powers are discovered). A no-prize (aka exalt) for SW! ;D I'm confident that it's a Stan Lee invention. It has a very Stan Lee-vibe to it (along with "Excelsior!" and my personal favorite, "'Nuff Said") Yes, Stan loved to insert contemporary catch-phrases into Marvel--a big part of why Marvel seemed so more relevant than DC back then. "Excelsior" is (among other things) the state motto of New York and was (and is) displayed in some NYC public schools so it's no wonder Stan used it. "Face front" and "true believer" were sayings used in the military during the time Stan was in the army. Ben's "What a revoltin(g) development this is" came from the radio series Life of Riley. I seem to vaguely recall reading somewhere that "It's clobberin(g) time" was used in wrestling or other similar venues prior to being used in the FF. Obviously its usage in those arenas increased after the Thing, FF and comics in general became better-known in pop culture.
