Here's a review of Secret Avengers #12 and #12.1
<SPOILERS>
First, #12
Well, Brubaker did it again, this just feels like a boring Captain America story, IMO.
His humorless Beast sucks.
I DO like the Prince of Orphans. Horrible name, though. I like the inclusion of periphery characters to flesh out and move the story along, like the "Archon" alien character from earlier. What I DON'T like is the exclusion of ANY Avengers except Steve and Hank (just barely).
This series under Brubaker has been sub-par, but I stuck with it, nonetheless.......which brings us to........................................ #12.1..... by a writer I have no knowledge of, Nick Spencer.
Well, this was ALOT better than any recent issue of Secret Avengers, IMO. First, it actually featured the SECRET AVENGERS, the whole line-up, i believe. It seems like forever since they were all in one issue. The art by Eaton and Mendoza was very good, and the colors were great. I liked the rendering of War Machine, Valkyrie, Sharon and Black Widow. Moon Knight seems a bit too "buff" and muscle-y for my taste, though.
Again, I can't get into this new Beast "persona". Boring.
I liked the use of US Agent, and he was true to character, a bit of a jerk. But I'm confused ---Is US Agent ALSO John Steele?? Anyone ? I know people laud over Brubaker's plots, but I just got lost with the John Steele thing.
The Mr. Negative subplot is intriguing. I liked it. It's nice to see a new villain for the Avengers, and thanks for it not being the Hood.
The whole " .1" thing is so cheesy, though. But it was a good issue, the best Secret Avengers issue IMO in a loooong time, perhaps, ever?
I'm hoping the new creative team will produce issues like this one. I would like to see Spencer stick around, but i guess Warren Ellis will take over eventually.
Is anyone else still reading SA?
