It's Ultimate Spider-man, so it's Bendis, so it's all hype and no substance. The claim that "It's unlike anything you've seen before," is pure Bendis hyperbole (even if someone else is actually shill-ing it), and a cast-iron guarantee that it's exactly like dozens of things you've seen before, but not as well executed, and ten times as padded. A huge "Meh" is in order...

Well, and in truest FOX News tradition, the facts themselves (in this case, the major distinction between the Mainstream Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe) are blurred in order to create a much more sensationalist perspective on this non-story. "OMIGOD, THEY'RE KILLING OFF SPIDERMAN!!!"*
*(in one single title of the bazillion he appears in every month. . . in a "pretend/what-if" alternate universe. . . as a cynical & admitted promotional stunt. . . and everyone knows they'll bring him back anyhow. . . )
I do kind of like that new costume, though. A reasonable synthesis of the traditional red w/ the practical/appropriate black.
And as always, I rarely miss any opportunity to state that Spidey overall has been dead to me since BND-- and we've been witnessing an alternate universe all of these years, anyhow. Well, except I haven't, as I let the title lapse when my subscription got eaten up by the WEEKLY production schedule. Good grief, what a ploy. . .

It is really hard to care about these character when they keep flip-flopping. I couldn't even muster up any care when the Human Torch died in the Universe I care about and he's always been one of my favorite characters because someone big dies every couple of months and you know they are coming right back. I haven't bought a Spider-man since the past 20 years were wiped out. I didn't buy any of the titles involved with the Dark Siege (I think that's the right one) storyline because it wasn't really Hawkeye, She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel etc. that were involved. I guess it's obvious then that I can't muster up the slightest amount of care that an alternate Universe version of Spider-man is being killed and replaced.

SW--the last time I went to the comic store was three weeks ago. I saw those various melodramatic FF covers dealing with the death of the Human Torch and just rolled my eyes. I really hate how Marvel tries to manipulate people into buying comics rather than just writing great stories. Man the FF has arguably the greatest cast of villains (go back and take a look at issue 100) in comics, as well as some of the greatest supporting cast (The Watcher, Inhumans, Namor, Black Panther, etc. ) ever! IMO,Byrne, way back when, got this, and mined the FF's treasure chest of supporting characters. After he left, it seemed the stories got weaker and more boring.

Sad to say I feel the same as you guys. Passionate True Believer since 1976 and decided three months ago to stop buying current Marvels (with the exception of Cap) and concentrate on filling the gaps in my collection. Haven't bought Spidey since Sins Past made me angrier than a comic story ever has. And while I accept the status quo must change I hardly recognise anything any more. When it's like that, why should I care? It just doesn't feel like the MU to me any more. So I quit. I didn't want to do it but I felt forced to as I wasn't enjoying anything I was buying; if anything, it was irritating and boring me. I thought it would be hard to stop and it turned out to be easy. My interest in the present MU died years ago and I didn't notice out of loyalty, habit, optimism it would change (hey, after Heroes Reborn we got Heroes Return!) and probably stupidity.
