I'm still not sure about how I feel regarding JMS' run on Thor, and I must admit I'm surprised to read so many websites pointing at it as best comic of the year, best run etc.
There were parts I really liked, for example the tribute to Captain America's death, but also others which just seemed to drag on forever, like the search for the missing Asgardians. It just doesn't feel like Thor did much at all ever since his return (find the Asgardians, kill his grandfather, get banished sums most of it), and the entire "Asgard in Oklahoma" thing was uninteresting for me.
Having said this, it could also be due to the constant delays. I'll read the whole run again when I have time, perhaps it will flow better without gaps.

Yes, it's much MUCH better reading it straight through. Those delays were painful. It's hard to believe that his run was only about 15 issues. I thought they were wonderfully woven. Plus we got to see him kick Stark's butt, which was a needed (tough love) release.

Although I think I have most of JMS's run piled up (unsorted) on the shelves downstairs, I've really only sat down w/ the last couple of issues, and "Finale" (Giant-Size Thor # whatever). "Finale", in particular, makes me want to go back and track the whole story down again. Here is a hallmark of good comic-writing: the ability to become involved in an on-going story (and in this case, breathlessly caught up in it!) even if one hasn't read all of the previous installments. The situations become evident and vibrant through solid writing, consistent characterization, and clear, linear artistic layout. Boy--- great art, in fact. There's tremendous depth without a sense of it being overly & densely written-- a trap that this title has historically fallen into an almost comic number of times-- really from its inception. Mind you, I agree that it would be much more aptly titled "Tales of Asgard"--- not nearly enough Thor to justify the name on the cover--- but I've found poor Bob's story to be one of the most compelling I've seen in a long while. I. . . really, really hope that, geeze, SOMEHOW there's more left for him. . . (I know, I know--- doesn't look exactly likely, it would cheapen the impact of the events, etc, etc-- but I'm old-fashioned.)

Ooh, I forgot to mention that I thought JMS's handling of the Warriors Three has been just about w/out peer. While Volstagg & Fandral will tend to write themselves, Hogun the Grim has particularly blossomed. "Hogun the Droll" or "Hogun the Bitingly Dry" has been a hilarious direction to go with him, and hasn't required a shred of character assassination. And, man, how great to see Volstagg prevail as a Juggernaut-level unstoppable force! Which completely earns him the right to be such a hilarious braggart-warrior-clown the other 98% of the time! And the whole subject of his, er, anatomical dynamics was actually handled with enough double-entendre & tact that it came off quite funny, as opposed to the usual in-your-face obvious crudeness that has become the standard these days.
Okay-- now I'm REALLY going---

I don't know if it was because it came out so soon after Finale, but I really, really liked #604, the first issue post Strac. I should definitely re-read his run in one go.

I'm pleased to see that Thor is actually appearing now in the book that bears his name. While JMS is a good writer, they might as well have called the book 'Loki' during his run.
