Great interview--thanks for posting this, Shiryu! I'm a huge Gene Colan fan--he's my favorite Silver Age artist...and I can't wait to buy the new book about him. The bit about Caniff was especially interesting, and not just because Caniff was cited as an influence (not surprising; you'll see Caniff's name mentioned in this regard by many artists from Gene's generation)...but I was also intrigued by the bit about Gene picturing Caniff as looking like "Terry" (Caniff's comic strip character). This reminded me that when I first came upon Neal Adams' art back in 1969, on the X-Men comic, I too pictured the artist as looking like one of his creations--as having the gaunt, high-cheekboned, intense visage of, say, Scott Summers, Larry Trask or Karl Lykos (all of whom Adams drew during his X-Men stint). So I was surprised sometime later when I came across a photo of Adams and he looked like a chubby-cheeked and friendly, a teddy bear of a guy! from the Bullpen photos in FF Annual #7 (1969)
