In my rereading of all my Avengers back issues, I recently finished #260. This was an unsatisfactory ending to what had been an excellent story arc, featuring Captain Marvel getting transported to the Andromeda galaxy by Nebula and her mercenaries, and caught in between a battle between them and the skrulls. I love how this arc showed off Marvel's resourcefulness and power. However, this epic saga ends with...the Beyonder showing up from out of nowhere and simply making Nebula disappear, ending the battle almost instantaneously. Ugh. I'd scream "dues ex machina", and "shame on you Stern", but I have to believe that this Beyonder nonsense was shoved down his throat by TPTB as they strived to tie everything in to their precious Secret Wars II series. Does anyone know if any if this was Stern's idea, or if my supposition is correct? It continues several issues later with an annoying #265 where the Avengers battle the Beyonder, which continues into Secret Wars II #9.
In a addition to that, we have #263, with a pointless X-Factor crossover, where the Avengers, after great effort, pull a capsule out of Jamaica Bay, which ultimately proves to be Jean Grey. Again, it seems like a crossover was forced upon Stern.
Unfortunate, since Stern was really on a roll by this point. Still, the greatest shame to me was #260, which gave such a lame ending to a promising an interesting arc that had been going on for several months, since back to when the Vision tried to take of the earth's computer systems.
Any insights on editorial's influence on Stern's stories?
