I will buy "The Sting of The Widow" too, though it omits her fishnetted appearances. It jumps from her initial incarnation as a non-costumed (though very glamorous) Iron Man anatagonist right to the black bodysuit era.

Although I am sure many of 'Tasha's early appearances have already received the Masterworks or Essentials treatment, it would be nice if Marvel would eventually get around to doing Essential volumes for characters who have proven popular yet do not have their own books. Such a book for the Black Widow might encompass material from 7-8 different titles when her appearances were strung together chronologically! But wouldn't it be great?

It's already out--I saw it at Austin Books last night. They also had a (I'm assuming)new hardcover collection of Amazing Adventures, featuring the Black Widow and the Inhumans. I almost bought both of them but opted instead for the new Essential Marvel Team Up paperback, mainly because it has the issues where the Wasp gets her powers seriously improved.

Such a book for the Black Widow might encompass material from 7-8 different titles when her appearances were strung together chronologically! But wouldn't it be great? Yes, it would be fantastic, and it's why I'm a bit disappointed in the material that's included in the BW book (though of course I'll still buy it!). Sure, I have access to Natasha's appearances in the Iron Man and Avengers Essentials, and the recent Hawkeye collection includes ToS #57 (first meeting of Hawk and Natasha), but there's something to be said for having a complete picture in one collection (preferably in color). Some of the DC Showcase books are pretty complete in terms of character appearance content, such as the Batgirl volume (includes stories from Detective, Batman, Justice League of America, Brave and the Bold, World's Finest, Supergirl), or the Legion (Adventure, Superboy, Superman, Jimmy Olsen). I guess until a person or team has their own feature, DC figures these sorts of collections have to be "padded" (and as a reader, it's very interesting to see all the early appearances). This reminds me that a few weeks ago I was going to post in the "TPBs I'd Like to See" thread that I wanted to see a collection comprised of Avengers #38-44--The Black Widow is a Traitor! arc--because it was Roy's first foray into a several-issue story (as far as I know), with plenty of emotional angst provided by Hawkeye and Natasha. (I'd even picked out the cover I wanted to see on--or adapted for--"my" tpb; this cover includes the entire cast of Avengers and associates back then...) But then I realized that these stories were already readily available elsewhere, in the Masterworks and Essentials...so I figured I'd probably be the only one who'd buy this tpb.

Bob, you may be referring to the Sting of the Black Widow direct market edition, with its cover image of Amazing Adventures #1...so the Inhumans are depicted on the cover, even though the "Sting" book contains Black Widow stories. The Inhumans Masterworks is scheduled for October and it also features a "split" cover from Amazing Adventures... It's kind of coincidental, isn't it, that the Widow and Inhumans' AA stories are being reprinted now. What's next? Can we expect a similar influx of Astonishing Tales (1970)--in the form of Dr. Doom and Ka-Zar collections--shortly?

Aaaah! Avengers #44? That's one of my least favorite Avengers covers ever. Ugh. I hate those giant cluttered fight scenes. Although, it is the only cover of that era that has the Black Widow on it so I'm not sure there's another choice for what you're proposing.

Ohhh Scott, I was hoping you wouldn't notice my post ...I well remember a while back you'd mentioned that you absolutely hated that cover...but it's always been one of my favorites! I love the colorful characters against that white background (even if the way some of them are depicted is puzzling--I mean, what is Hawkeye doing? And Wanda's hex power looks like electricity!) (I also have a fondness for the next cover #45, its dark equivalent...) But yes, another reason why I chose #44 for my proposed tpb is because (as you noted) Natasha did not appear on any other cover (#38-43) during this arc. I suppose it's because her activities for much of this arc kept her apart from the rest of the gang, but you'd think Marvel could have found some way to include her on a cover (symbolic cover, inset, etc.) since it was her and Hawkeye's angst that provided the emotional punch here. And immediately preceding this arc she'd had cover exposure--#36, #37 (as well as on earlier covers), so it's not like tptb didn't know she was part of the cast.

Yeah, it's puzzling, especially considering how important she is to the story -- specifically for #43. I mean, that is her husband on the cover there, and they manage to fit in floating heads for everyone else in the Marvel Universe. I don't know why they didn't have her on the cover for #43 at least.
