As Dlw's and others have suggested, to decrease the workload on the servers and avoid burying old topics too quickly, we should compress all the web reviews (IGN, Newsarama etc) in a single topic in each section. So from now on, we should post all the ones about New Avengers here only, ok? EDIT: To help everyone find what he wants when this topics became big, a good index is in order. Read what Ign had to say about New Avengers #50.
Fiction is at its best when it's unpredictable. Surprises don't only thrill readers—they engage them, forcing them to watch the story more closely, lest they miss the next curve in the road. Predictability, on the other hand, anesthetizes a reader. It lulls them into a sense of security, and convinces them they don't really need to pay close attention, because they already know what's going to happen next.
Brian Michael Bendis clearly understands this axiom, even if he doesn't always utilize it. The end of Secret Invasion failed to inspire comic-geek fervor in its readers because it was rather predictable. New Avengers #50, on the other hand, excites because it doesn't give us exactly what we were promised. It gives us something better: a story that's not about punches or kicks, at least not entirely, but a story about how heroic character is maintained in the face of challenges and pressures that seek to annihilate it.
The Avengers, new or old, have always been a family. Consequently, it's the characters and their interactions with one another that drive the stories—not the super villains they face, or the battles they fight. Bendis takes the occasions of New Avengers #50 as an opportunity to remind the reader of this, and he does so with grace, originality, and a consistent repetition of a solid theme: character is what counts.
That's not to say there isn't a big fight scene in this issue, because there most certainly is. But the fight, Bendis reminds us (just after Hawkeye does, in a nice bit of meta-commentary dialogue) is beside the point. It's what the fight reveals about the characters that's important.
Bendis utilizes the artistic talents of a bevy of artists to literally illustrate this theme. During the fight sequence, each of the New Avengers gets a page drawn by a different artist, as Bendis reveals the characters inner monologue to show us what they're really thinking about when they're throwing those punches. It's become a clich? trope of anniversary issues to use multiple artists, but Bendis does so in a way that enhances the story.
By emphasizing character over action and difficult choices over fisticuffs, Bendis reminds us what really separates the New Avengers from their dark counterparts. The man may not have given us what we were anticipating in this issue, but by subverting our expectations he has crafted a story worthy of the Avengers legacy and, more importantly, the characters that built it.
Review Score: 9.0 Outstanding
Read this other review from another ign reviewer
There are two main types of Bendis Avengers books. There are the talky, witty character moment issues, and there are the massive blowout fight issues. New Avengers #50 falls into both those categories, and fortunately does both quite well.
This team of Avengers (you really need to specify these days, don't you?) waste no time in reacting to Norman Osborn's twisted version and hatch a plan to lure them into fight. Without spoiling too much, let's just say it doesn't really go as planned. The first half of the issue fills the "talky, witty" quota, with team members displaying various reactions to having their likenesses hijacked for the Dark Avengers, and in terms of the issue's script, it's probably the more enjoyable part. Bendis is on with the characterization in that part, and the individual personalities flow together nicely. It's revisited in the closing sequence, and all I'll say about that is Bendis really upped Clint Barton's Q rating for me with this issue.
The fight scene, then, is more notable for its visual component. This being a multiple-of-25 anniversary issue, we've got a deluge of guest artists in addition to Billy Tan's work on the framing sequences. But rather than a bunch of iconic pin-ups bolted onto the end of the issue as backmatter, the art during the fight is handled in a frankly brilliant way: each Avenger gets a "spotlight" page of internal dialogue drawn by an artist familiar with the hero. Cap's page is done by Steve Epting, Iron Fist has David Aja art, Spider-Woman's features Alex Maleev (penciller of her upcoming ongoing), and so on. Realistically, the guest art technique is a fantastic addition to the issue that helps solidify the team as a band of real heroes in their own rights -- a true gathering of earth's mightiest heroes.
I will say this about the issue, though: without giving too many details away, I did feel a bit cheated by the promotion for this issue. The expectations that I was led to have for what this issue would contain were completely wrong. I'm not going to cry false advertising, but I was a little disappointed on that level.
The bottom line, though, is that issue #50 of New Avengers is as good a superhero book as the previous 49 issues have been, and as far as the Avengers line is concerned, it's certainly the most exciting piece of the tapestry.
Review Score: 8.3 Impressive

As for New Avengers #50-
After reading this and once again (and for the last time- this will be my last Bendis-penned expenditure) scratching my head at the readers/reviewers who consider Bendis a great dialogue-writer, I thought this was poorly written. Face it, every character is using the same voice--Bendis' foul mouthed voice. And has anyone ever told the guy you can use these things called boxes to put word in- thus moving the story along without having the characters talking over and over about every little back-story or occurence.
And I like the way the heroes kept saying, "I don't even want to HEAR the word Skrull ever again!" LOL! Welcome to MY world for the last year-and -a half!
But on a positive note, the pictures were real pretty---
in fact, to maximize your enjoyment of #50, don't even read the words.
I'm not kidding, I went back over it just admiring the art and action, and without Bendis' words, it's pretty darn good.
Oh yeah <SPOILER ALERT>
he's pretty much ruined Hawkeye/Ronin/Clint. revealing his identity to the world pretty much kills the need to wear the Ronin mask, and for that matter any hope/need for Clint putting the Hawkeye mask back on. So thanks for ruining that too, BMB. Stay classy!

Don’t miss the book Comic Book Resources says has "everything one might want in an intelligently written adventure comic." Two questions: 1) What comic would that be? 2) What are CBR's criteria for "an intelligently written adventure comic?" Are they: A) Tits B) Ass C) Ninjas D) Skrulls E) Spider-Man F) Wolverine G) All of the above RSC

That review is HILARIOUS! Man that guy totally NAILS what a frikkin fraud Bendis is.
You know I swear Bendis is just taunting the comic-buying crowd--writing the most incoherent crap ever and seeing how far he can go before his Moonie-like apologists turn on him. I can just see him cackling, saying "man if these fools accept THIS crap then the brain-washing is complete!"

Who will be the next sorcerer supreme? I see the Hood's ugly face in the splash of people who would replace Dr. Strange. Um, even though he's hardly used any magic at all from what I've seen. All he's got is a magic freakin' blanket.
I'd bet my cat, my real fat cat that the BENDIS! makes his pet bad guy the new SS to try and give him some more credentials towards being a real villian.
...but, I could be wrong...

Geeze, which would have absolutely nothing to do with the long-documented MU history of what the Sorcerer Supreme is supposed to be, or how they're supposed to achieve this status. Hood is one of the least-interesting bad-guys I've seen in a long, long time.
Apart from that--- I have caught up. I've read through the brief New Avengers canon. Mind you, I have not read Civil War, Initiative, or (for the most part) Mighty Avengers, or any of the Secret Invasion spin-offs (I assume there were some?). I could rattle on at extraordinary- and painful- length with my take on it-- but I can somehow hear the eyeballs glazing, the grimaces grimacing, and the fingers quivering over several sets of keyboards (tough things to hear, all of them), so I'm gonna refrain.
One thought, though. How could anyone have lasted for MONTHS reading this, when it so rarely included any Avengers at all in the more recent months? Unless the Queen Skrull and the Hood are now honorary members, the title of this book would seem to be a serious example of false advertising. . .
