Ign.com reviews Secret Invasion: Thor #2.
Well into the sixth month of Marvel's Invasion, I'm starting to suspect it might be a good idea for IGN to adopt a stock review to copy and paste for any tie-in that falls into the realm of "typical." That is, the heroes fight some Skrulls and banter on, in dialogue box or word bubble, just why it's so important for them to win this particular battle. There a few tie-ins that stray from this model, but they're a worryingly low number. And unfortunately, SI: Thor #2 is more or less "typical."
This issue is a bit strange in that it does some things right, but ultimately doesn't drive the story anywhere. For one, Matt Fraction gives Donald Blake some much-needed page time. After so much focus on Thor's godly duties in the home title, it's easy to forget about the good doctor. To be fair, the Skrulls do have a valid reason to attack the Thor cast, which some other tie-in issues can't boast of their characters. And Matt Fraction wisely gave a little attention to why he chose the specific power set of one of the Super-Skrulls, which is a nice change of pace for the villains.
But at the end of the day, the issue is exceedingly light on plot. While Blake helps a local woman deliver her baby, the Asgardians led by Beta Ray Bill fight off the Skrull Invasion. That's it. Doug Braithwaite's art is very nice to look at, but this issue is really a concept with a natural lifespan of about five or six pages. I can't help feeling a little ripped off by the fact that this miniseries was dragged out to three issues.
As ridiculous as it sounds, even if you're really into Thor you could ostensibly skip this issue, only read issues #1 and #3, and still get the full story. Despite its minor charms here and there, it's really a fluff installment of a minor tie-in.
Review Score: 6.0 Passable
