Ign.com reviews Ms.Marvel #27.
Ms. Marvel #27 finishes the title's "Infiltration" tie-in, a story that's had a very odd trajectory. While it initially started strong, I can't help but feel the ending sort of fizzled in comparison. Still, in comparison, the title's far above where it used to be in terms of quality.
When Ms. Marvel began its "Infiltration" tie-in, I thought it brought the title (and character) a purpose and direction that'd been sorely lacking. The idea of Carol having an impostor running around was intriguing enough to build a decent story on. Since then, the arc has morphed into one about her boyfriend William Wagner, who may or may not be who he says he is, and her using Wonder Man as, uh, a "shoulder" to "cry" on. This issue may feature the most tenuous "Infiltration" tie-in yet; yes, at least one Skrull appears, but for all intents and purposes it doesn't have a lot to do with the bigger picture. This is as close to a Red Skies tie-in as Secret Invasion has come so far. Andre Coelho's guest pencils are certainly up to the book's usual standards and in Adriana Melo's stead, does a pretty good job.
Now, the book's obvious strength is Carol's life as Ms. Marvel. The superheroing component is done very well, especially with extra focus given to supporting cast members Sleepwalker, Machine Man, and Agent Sum. The problem is Carol's personal life, which I don't feel has the same shine. William was never that great a character, so an issue based on his well-being isn't exactly going to have me jumping up and down. And I'm not sure having Carol play Musical Boyfriends is going to inspire a lot of respect for her as a person. That's a kink that should be worked out sooner rather than later.
As Ms. Marvel heads into a proper Secret Invasion tie-in (as opposed to the "Secret Invasion: Infiltration" tie-in the last three issues have been -- geez, get your banners straight!), one suspects the focus will be superheroics, where the book excels. Hopefully this one odd issue will only be a glitch.
Review Score: 7.5 Good
