Found a copy of "Assembled" at my local comic shop, and really enjoyed reading it. I only wish Part Three, Chapter Sixteen; Why They Are Avengers was more complete to include every single memember. Perhaps the second book can do this and more character detail would be a bonus. I will be looking for the second book!

My favorite chapter had to be the one examining the New Avengers storyline... except the parts Baloo wrote, of course As for why we didn't smash that particular era to a pulp, well, there were a few reasons, speaking for myself (can't speak for Baloo). One, I thought the "jailbreak" opening story was highly enjoyable, so I couldn't trash the run completely. Two, I was trying to remain at least somewhat positive, since I figured we might have readers who jumped on board during "New Avengers" reading the book, and I didn't want it to seem like a bunch of old farts talking about the horrible state of current comicdom and how things were a lot better "back in our day." So, in the interests of being balanced, we tried to highlight the parts we enjoyed about the run, but I think that, overall, readers can still tell that this wasn't our favorite run on the book. Bendis lost his way rather quickly, and it became clear (at least to me) that he had no idea how to write a team book. And, outside of Spider-Man, no real understanding of most of the characters, at least in terms of how they'd been portrayed in the past (which is kind of important in a serial medium like comics). Anyway, for those who read it, thanks for reading, and if there was anything tedious in the manner it was presented, I can only humbly suggest that, like me, you blame Baloo. Trace

I was also thinking I have noticed a few new people joining the forum recently. Maybe they found it from the book? Sir, sir! Hi, nice to find the forum, loved the book, even when I didn't agree (I'm another one who found the Triune a blight on Kurt's run). The only section I didn't enjoy, while appreciating the effort, was the issue by issue rundown of the Heroes Reborn run - they really weren't worth remembering.

Woo-HOO! I'm glad you enjoyed my chapter on the Proctor & The Gatherers era. That's at least two people I've had say they were surprised by the positive light I cast this era in. I enjoyed the section too, though I'd have liked more on why you thought Proctor was a potential marquee villain; I honestly cannot remember a thing about that storyline, just that I liked the soap stuff.

Just curious: where is your shop? What part of the country are you in?

"I'd have liked more on why you thought Proctor was a potential marquee villain"
He's got a strong visual appeal, his motivation was strong and he had a strong connection to Dane and Sersi. Plus, the Avengers need a few more heavies added to their rogue's gallery. Proctor almost fit the bill, IMO.
The only problem, as I stated in my chapter of the book, is that his motivation seems crafted a little too specifically to that one story. Now that the story has been told, there's not a lot else to do with him.
Of course, I'd love to be proven wrong. It would be great to see him come back and give Black Knight some more trouble.

Thanks David. I've just looked up Proctor to remind myself of who he was and what he did, and realise that in my head he's mixed up with numerous X-Men c-list villains such as Exodus. The alternate-Earth nature of Proctor also puts him in the Nineties X-ballpark. I find alternative versions of 616-ers terribly confusing, they usually muddy the waters when they show up; perhaps the writers who succeeded Bob Harras felt the same, explaining his non-use.

I have a pretty strong dislike for The Gatherers, based mostly on the fact that it felt like it took a decade to get resolved. What do you think about the timing and pacing of the story?

I read it a few months ago and it didn't seem too bad. However, reading all the issues one after the other, without having to wait a full month every time, probably made it easier to go through.

I actually read it in a very similar way, and I came to the opposite conclusion. I guess it all must have to do with enjoyment. If you like what you're reading, you can stomach more of it.

Hello Van and Assemblers!
Van, I wanted to tell you how nice it was to meet you on Sunday at Heroes Con. I was the one with whom you "traded" Assembled Vol. 1 for my book about the DC B-List Characters. ("Riddle Me This...")
I also wanted to comment on how much I am enjoying Assembled! As a fan of the Avengers from way back at the tail end of the Roy Thomas era (Issue #94 was my first), I am enjoying this book immensely - it is a real page-turner. Seriously!
Like many, I took a break or two from comics for many years between my teenage years and well into adulthood. My research for recent articles for the Pulse online and Back Issue Magazine have given me the enviable opportunity to go back and read many of the Avengers issues that I missed. I wish I had read Assembled! earlier, so that I could have put all the different eras of the team in context before going back and reading certain chunks of its history.
My current articles are appearing on the Pulse every week: "Who's Got a Secret in Secret Invasion?" and might be of interest to members of this forum. (www.comicon.com/pulse - just do a word search for "Bruce" if my installment isn't near the top.) For instance, Episode 2.1 last month dealt with Mockingbird (late of the West Coast Avengers, who recently appeared in Secret Invasion) and this coming week will see my 2-part piece on Spider-Woman, who has ties with both the new AND old Avengers teams.
I also got to do a lot of Avengers back-issue reading for my article in last month's Back Issue Magazine (#27) about the Sub-Mariner. (The parts I had to self-edit out about Subby's tenure with the team would have made an extensive article in itself!)
So, enough of the commercial: I just hope that some of the folks on this board will read and enjoy my articles as much as I am getting a kick out of Assembled! Please let me know if you have any comments.
I can't wait for Vol. 2 and 3!

Your Subby article was comprehensive and informative and a real pleasure to read. I recall the death of Dorma was something that hit me hard way back when; I couldn't believe Marvel would actually kill off a regular character like her, but they did. That was a very shocking issue. And this was a few years before Gwen died, though of course the Spider-Man comic (and character) was much more popular than Sub-Mariner...so Gwen's death had more of a universal impact. But I have never forgotten the last few panels of Sub-Mariner #37. Anyway- -great article about one of my favorite characters!

Thanks very much, Bruce. It was great to meet you and I plan on checking out your articles on the Pulse from now on.
The DC book you traded me for Assembled! is amazing. Overwhelming, almost. I know once you're able to make it available to the fans on a widespread basis, people will be eating it up.
Glad to have you aboard!

Oh ho ho-!
Just received ASSEMBLED 1 in the mail today! My dear shopping-impaired mother opted for giving me a rather generous Amazon Gift Certificate (which she got around to ordering on Dec 24th) for Christmas this year, so I figured, well heck, let me just use it to start filling in overlooked items from my Christmas list. ASSEMBLED 1 & 2 were the first things on that list. . . and yet somehow never made it under the tree. *sigh*
Honestly, it was a great Christmas, regardless---!
But now I can atlastatlastatlast join in the deeper, thoughtful, historical conversations that often take place here, and present myself as enlightened and informed. I can be one of the COOL PEOPLE! (Ohhhh, it's a dream come true. . . )
