You're right there overlord but I was speaking as in a villain coalition of the big names like Mandarin, Red Skull or whoever. Doom is certainly not above using other villains as pawns, however even then he's intelligent enough that unlike most big name villains I doubt he'd sent the pawns to his true goal, instead he'd use them as distractions or hindrances as you pointed out.

Still Doom with a bunch of super powered mercs seems crossover worthy in itself. Afterall most versions of the Masters of Evil are a bunch of goons with one mastermind on the top. Besides think Doom could play some other masterminds for his own gain, someone like Baron Mordo. Besides it doesn't have be someone like Doom who organizes this event, some B-list masterminds like the Mad Thinker or Count Nefaria could use a step up.

Actually, Doom and Kang is a brilliant team-up- I seem to recall there was even speculation that they were related or one and the same in the comics, but that may just be my hazy mind. Yes, they were supposed to be related but, what with all the revelations & counterrevelations, retconns & revisions we've gotten through the years regarding Kang, it's anybody's guess (or perhaps only our acting archivist & custodian of knowledge, the Night Phantom... he hasn't been around lately, by the way, has he...?) if this still applies... Doom met Kang (Rama-Tut) in FF Annual #2 and speculated on their connection. While a connection is possible, FF #273 revealed indirectly that Kang is a descendant of Reed Richards’ father Nathaniel; it has since been revealed that Kang’s original name is indeed “Nathaniel Richards”! Another possible connection is that there is reason to believe that the earlier Nathaniel is the biological father of Kristoff Vernard, who once housed a copy of Doom’s consciousness…

I remember he had a crush on Cassie Lang...

Now that our friendly neighbourhood walking marvel encyclopedia has stepped in, (Thanks Phantom!) I think I can answer this point, as far as I know, Kristoffdied when Doom regained his throne, however he returned and as far as I know, was last seen when Stryfe displaced him in Latveria.
