I'm curious to see what kind of response Van will get for the 2005 Jarvis awards. If you don't mind, after you vote, just sign out here with an "I did". Thanks.

I voted, albeit not for all of the topics. I am one who Van should scold because I don't read Young Avengers, I didn't pick up the Last Hero Standing mini, and I don't care (as duly stated elsewhere) for New Avengers -- although I continue to be a masochist and poor economist and buy it each month. So, that left me with basically The Ulitmates 2 for my voting resources.
Anyone else care to comment?

I'm done, only have to send the file to Van. Most of my votes went for Last Hero Standing, which I enjoyed a lot. I don't read Young Avengers and Ultimates, and didn't want to vote for NA (I think I only voted for its colorist). PS: sadly it took me 10 minutes of thinking before voting for the "comic every one should buy" section

So... lemme get this straight... you guys buy NEW AVENGERS but don't like it... but you don't buy YOUNG AVENGERS, which absolutely rocks. Hrmmmm. I simply don't know how to respond to that. Yes I do, on further reflection. I'll ask this: What does someone have to say to get you to at least pick up an issue, or (even better) the first trade paperback collection? Hey, if you come to one of the summer cons, I'll throw in a few copies as prizes for Marvel vs DC Jeopardy!

I buy NA because it contains Thor stories and Cap stories too ^^ So I can ignore one bad story and enjoy the two good ones.

Err... I tried Young Avengers Van, and yes it is waaaay better than NA (not that this says much...) but do you really think the book is so great?
We have the angry black character with the attitude problem, the token gay character (actually two of them) to be PC (not to mention that one half of the couple should not even exist in the first place - those guys writing for Marvel nowadays really don´t get what Byrne tried to do in WCA...), Kang is a quiet boy who plays with dolls and get bullied (wtf?), the obligatory Jessica Jones guest starring (and how old is Hulking anyway? Just to know how many years in the past the Kree Skrull War happened) - an exactly when did Mar-Vell and the Skrull princess got time to... well, you know what I mean.
But I guess I´m off topic here.

Van -- I'm not opposed to trying Young Avengers -- I just haven't gotten around to it. It's on my "to-do" list ! As I've said, I don't buy much more than 6-7 comics each month. A lot of the money I allocate toward my hobby goes toward picking up Marvel Legends action figures, the occasional DC Direct figure, and Essentials and other tpb collections.

Did you get my e-mail with the votes btw ? Apparently I've had some problems with the e-mail in the last few days.

Vonbek said:
Absolutely!
I haven't thought of him that way, at all. He has certain issues that are very much involved in his attempts to live up to the legacy of his father and of being a hero, etc. (and the legacy of Cap himself, and who could live up to that?) and those things have driven him to some questionable methods of trying to measure up. "Angry Black character" doesn't enter into it, as far as I can see...
I neither know how they are "token" nor "PC." Quite the opposite, in both cases, in fact, I would argue. "Token" would indicate (to me) that the writer is making a character into a certain stereotype in order to fill out a pre-ordained roster-- "We simply MUST have at least one gay character!" But I don't see that here at all. I see two very interesting characters, for whom their sexuality only adds another layer of complication for them as characters, and for the overall story. One might as well say they have a "token size-changing character," or a "token multiple-weapon-using" character. But that would be true of almost every super hero team, wouldn't it? So I must say I don't see the objection, on those grounds.
In other words, if you don't like the way the book is written, that is entirely your business, and more power to you-- don't buy comics you don't enjoy! But I don't happen to agree--at all-- with some of the rationales you give for it.
Not at all.

Shoot. I don't feel very qualified to vote, because I haven't read much of the books published last year. Been reading mostly books published 30 years ago. So, while I suppor the endeavor, and voted for the Hall of Fame, I'm going to let better informed people have their way with the other categories.
