Journey Into Mystery 115
"The Vengeance of the Thunder God!"
writer: Stan Lee
penciller: Jack Kirby
inker: Frankie Ray
letterer: Artie Simek
This issue continues right where 114 left off. In Asgard, Thor discovers Loki, along with his hostage, Jane Foster, and engages him in battle. The battle is halted by Odin. Loki claims that Thor brought Jane Foster to Asgard to give her immortality, and Odin, while not completely trusting Loki, declares that the two princes must undergo the trial of the gods. Thor asks Odin to give him 48 hours on Earth, to take Jane back and to finish his fight with Crusher Creel, the Absorbing Man. Odin grants this.
Thor delivers Jane to her apartment, and then searches out Creel. Creel has taken refuge in a country home, where he is terrorizing the couple that lives there. Thor locates the reporter, Hobbs, and a huge group of policemen who are on their way to the house. Thor and Creel fight, with Creel taking on the forms of the uru metal, fire, and the very earth beneath him. Finally, Thor declares that Creel has gone too far, and begins to spin his hammer rapidly. Creel disappears in a purple cloud, and the ground that was beneath him is fused into glass! The confused policeman ask what happen. Thor explains that he turned Creel into helium, and the villain is now drifting up, into Earth's atmosphere! Thor then spins Mjollnir again and returns to Asgard, to await his fate.
We get some very nice scenes with the Absorbing Man in this issue. While he is holed up in the house, he turns into glass, silk, bronze, and iron. His most amazing transformations though are while fighting Thor, where he takes on the forms of fire (looking like a pin-headed Human Torch) and a gigantic being with legs of wood, a torso of stone and a head of steel!
Thor's new powers: the trend continues. This issue, Thor grants Jane "the gift of forgetfulness" so she will not remember being in Asgard! Note however, he did not have to kiss her like Superman did Lois Lane in Superman 2. Thor also projects flames from his hammer, since he has "power over nature's elements". I guess this one is not too much of a stretch, since he does control the weather. But the kicker this time around is the power he uses to defeat the Absorbing Man: "By spinning my enchanted mallet at cyclotronic speed, I have the power to transmute the elements themselves!"
It's also amazing how terrible a parent Odin is. Despite knowing Loki is the biggest liar in the Nine Worlds, he still doesn't trust Thor!
The art looked a little more streamlined this issue. The inker is credited as Frankie Ray - was this Frank Giacoia? In any case, it looked much cleaner than the art inked by Chic Stone.
