When I first read an issue of THOR, back in about 1977, the ODIN QUEST was underway. Man, that thing just rocked. Thor's sort of interesting as an Earthbound super hero, but he's also got that whole godly/mystical thing to him, giving him two completely separate worlds--universes-- in which to operate. It's as if half of all of Iron Man's adventures happened in a sort of Matrix-like VR world, and the other half happened in the main Marvel Universe. The Odin Quest took full advantage of both-- he was piloting the Starjammer (I kid you not) through Asgardian "space," with a crew made up of Sif and the Warriors Three (hey, I actually wrote a MV1 story set in this period...). The Recorder was there, too. They fought mystical critters, but also villains such as the Grey Gargoyle. And I seem to recall that wonderful Sal Buscema art (he of the trapezoidal mouths on everyone), though I may be wrong on that. Anyone else remember this storyline? Am I remembering it over-fondly? (I was, what, eight or nine at the time...) Oh, here's the link for my story: Celestial Conflagration www.avengersassemble.us/conflagration.html

When I was but a waif, I picked up a couple of ratty 12-cent Thors at a garage sale. I think the numbers were 147 and 148, and they contained the story where the Wrecker gained Asgardian enchantment. Good stuff!! I also acquired, about the same time, one of the Galactus origin stories. I think it was issue #162. I should buy the Essentials so I can relive what I recall as very good Lee/Kirby work.

Does anyone have Thor Annual #5? It has a fantastic Buscema-drawn story in which the Olympians and Asgardians engage in all-out war. It is an epic...

Thor is one of my fav characters, but his book has been difficult to find in Italy until recent years. I've only read from the last Odin's death onwards, and it was ok but nothing spectacular. This Odin quest sounds great though, is it in the masterworks somewhere ? I'd love to read some proper Thor stuff.

The Essential Thor set is a must for fans as it finally breaks into the Kirby issues and collects the first appearances of beings such as the Warriors Three; the Destroyer; the High Evolutionary; Man Wolf; Ego and Fafnir. If there's just one more volume then the first appearances of Ulik; the Wrecker and Mangog are a sure thing - not to mention the super rare 2nd appearance of Him.
Beyond that another essential run to have is Thor #281-318, Volume 1 ( + Annuals). This covers the Celestial saga; the first fight with the Wrecking Crew; the Airwalker Robot and Firelord and a series of both Asgardian and human intrigues.
After that of course comes the Simonson run which begins from #337 and for the sake of completion can be collected until #385.
Sadly, it is then utter rubbish for some time...

Thor's Celestials saga was mind-blowing, indeed. Ahh, the Celestials... those cosmic Ebert and Roepers... Celestial Ebert: "I liked this planet. I think this race did a decent job of evolving. I give them thumbs up."
Celestial Roeper: "Um, I didn't understand this race at all. I give them thumbs down."
Celestial Ebert: "You're giving them thumbs DOWN?!"
Celestial Roeper: "Yep."
Celestial Ebert: ... ... *shrugs*
WHA-BOOOOOOOOOMMMMM!!!! ;D Probably the main thing that keeps it out of my ranks of favorite comics stories is that I had a hard time collecting all the issues, as they were coming out. It wasn't until just a couple of years ago that I finally tracked down the last few issues (including #300) and found out how the story ended. It had a little of that "Babylon 5" Shadow War stuff to it, too-- you just knew there was no way the good guy(s) could win, straight-up; the opposition was waaaaay too formidable. You had to "think your way out," a la "Into the Fire" (B5, season 4). Great for SF TV shows... not quite as effective for a super hero action comic book!

Yeah, I go back a few years. I can still remember when the Avengers were just Hawkeye, the Wasp and Giantman.
And I still remember Emma.

Hmm, I´m counting... I missing some people in your census, Wanda, Pietro and, of course, Cap. Btw, one of my alltime favored rosters is Cap/Hawkeye/Scarlet Witch/Quicksilver, I´d think the smallest roster ever? It´s amazing how well this roster worked and - imo - a demonstration that smaller rosters are better for good storytelling than bigger ones.

Btw, one of my alltime favored rosters is Cap/Hawkeye/Scarlet Witch/Quicksilver, I´d think the smallest roster ever? For a short while, the roster was just Cap, Iron Man, and Thor. Tigra joined but then quickly left. Later, when the East Coast team dissolved in the Doctor Druid–Kang Nebula debacle, Cap singlehandedly restarted the team. So, he was a roster of one.

I wonder if you can consider one person a team ^^ I actually like the 7 members roster, I think it's a good number to keep it functioning and to add enough sub plots to the series.

Back around issue #48 to #55 vol 1 the official roster was Hawkeye, Goliath and the Wasp. The Black Panther joined somewhere in there and Cap came back in #56. I remember Thor and Iron Man "guest starred" in issue #50 and that the Panther was there by issue #53 for the X-Men cross over, but for one or two issues the Avengers numbered only 3.
In fact, if you look at the cover of #52, it show the Grim Reaper standing over the bodies of the 3 fallen Avengers with the Panther about to pounce on him. In the corner the show the "heads" of Hercules, the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, but all three had left before this issue. The Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver left in #45 or #46 because Wanda's powers were gone and Hercule left right after he became an official member.

I wonder if you can consider one person a team OK, when Cap was re-forming the East Coast Avengers, he recruited Demolition Man and then soon lost him (D-Man apparently died...but not really) in that same issue ( Captain America #349):

Hercules would have drop kicked the Grim Reaper clear into the ocean.

All done in "Jump Off The Page" King Kirby style. Wahoo! Live doesn't get better than this.

A couple of years ago I went to a local antiques fair (fancy swap meet) and found a guy selling a lot of old (60's and 70's) comics. He had a bunch of Journey Into Mystery and early Thors, which I snagged. I really enjoyed the Search for Galactus, which I believe ran around 162-170. Big Daddy Odin himself becomes concerned about the World Eater and sends Thor out to investigate. Thor brings along his buddy the Recorder, and they travel through the galaxy, encountering all sorts of weirdness (including Him, if memory serves). It was great Lee-Kirby cosmic adventure, and I think a couple issues even had Kirby incorporating photo montages in the art. Classic stuff.

I'm reading these stories on my Thor DVD. It's the issues where Galactus reveals his origins, isn't it ? and soon enough there should be the first appearance of Ego, the Living Planet.

Is that the bootleg DVD you bought out of that guy's trunk, or is the legal one out yet?

Ehm, the "bootleg" one ^^ Or at least I assumed so, because there is no nice package and the price was very low. Still it cointains all the issues of V#1, including the annuals, in high quality and cbr format.

Sorry. I've replaced the drooling smile with a simple *drooling*
As for the Dvd's, I haven't ordered them yet, but it's very tempting, since there are no official discs for these books yet. We'll see...

Go back to the other smiley! I was just giving you some friendly grief...
Depending on the cost and quality, I say buy them. The others will sell for around $40. Worth it, but a steep price nonetheless.

Great ! www.z4um.com/images/smiles/drooling.gif [/img] is back The quality of the Thor DVD was very good. In fact, better than the two official ones because the files are in cbr and not in pdf, so they are lighter and, IMO, easier to browse. However, it lacks the search options, basically it's only a huge disc with 4.70 GBs of comics.
