For all of you I.M. fans out there, I'd like to find out your thoughts on who were the best (or favorite) writers who handled the Golden Avenger. For me, these are my favorite three: 3) David Michelinie; 2)Kurt Busiek & 1)Len Kaminski.

Great question. Without a doubt, my favorite IRON MAN writer was David Michelinie, during the JR Jr/Layton run. That run defined Iron Man as much as any run ever defined a character, I'd say. Too bad few writers since then have followed that same plan. Second would be Kurt Busiek, for several reasons. One, Kurt respected Iron Man and Tony Stark and it showed. Two, Kurt is a wonderfully talented writer, and despite not really doing his best work on the book, it still made for one of the finest runs Shellhead's ever known. Three, Kurt gave us my beloved Rumiko Fujikawa ( RUMIKO LIVES!!). And four, Kurt introduced Detective Plexico and used him a couple of times. How could I not love that?! Third: Bill Mantlo. He was writing the book when I first started reading it, with issue #96 (vs. Ultimo in Washington, DC!) Mantlo gave us great villains (Ultimo, the Mandarin, the Guardsman armor, Midas, etc) plus the Soviet Super Soldiers, the Rigellian Colonizers, the Knights of Wundagore, Jack of Hearts, Whitney Frost/Madame Masque -- MAN! Those Mantlo issues were like a guided tour through the Marvel Universe, for a newbie reader in 1977! My other favorite writer of Iron Man as a character was Jim Shooter. I always enjoyed the way Shooter portrayed Stark and Iron Man, balancing the good and bad sides of Tony's nature while still making Iron Man heroic and compelling as a character.

I have to go with Van's third choice. Mantlo added soooo much to the line I gotta love him.

Michelinie's run elevated Iron Man from just another superhero to a real character with a well-defined personality. The work he and Layton did will always be the prime version of the character for me.

Michelinie's run elevated Iron Man from just another superhero to a real character with a well-defined personality. The work he and Layton did will always be the prime version of the character for me. CouldnĀ“t agree more. They turned a character who was more or less the stereotype of a playboy into a human being with flaws, but keeping his heroic qualities. This is "shades of grey" to me, not turning a character into his black counterpart.
