I felt that this LS started with some degree of promise. Joe Casey's
not bad. I've tended to like most of Shellhead's limited series in
the past. And I liked the choices of villains.
But, after reading #4, the disappointment factor is creeping upward,
bigtime.
The upcoming "big event" in the story, involving the Living Laser,
has been obvious from the first moment. But it's been dragged out so
long, so far, that by the time it happened (apparently), I just
really didn't care anymore.
Because, clearly, Joe's been to the Bendis School of Storyline
Dragging Out. A decent amount of stuff happened in the first issue,
but since then, it's just been so slow. This entire story, thus far,
easily could have fit into one comic, or two at most.
I can't remember the last time an Iron Man story was actually about
*Iron Man*, in the armor, doing something for a very extended period
of time. Something like being off on a deep space mission with Jack
of Hearts, starting in #109. I agreed in principle with the idea,
put forward some time ago, that IM's book should be about Tony Stark
first and foremost, with the armor as one of his cool weapons--
portraying him sort of as a James Bond figure. But it's just
gotten out of control. You hardly ever see Iron Man
stories any longer that focus for an extended period of story upon
*Iron Man*, out doing Iron Man stuff. Being a superhero, fighting
bad guys, etc.
As for this series, I'm sure it'll read much better as a TPB. But it
could have been a good comic series, too. Too bad it hasn't been.
