ign.com gives a review on Ms.Marvel #25.
I'll confess, I haven't followed Ms. Marvel with any regularity. I like the character a lot, but each time I've peeked around the corner to see what was happening in her solo series, it was never interesting enough to convince me to stick around (see: Brood, M.O.D.O.K., alternate reality Carol, etc.). Being the self-admitted Marvel zombie I am, I snagged issue #25 based purely on the "Secret Invasion: Infiltration" banner and I'm happy to report that, unlike last week's Captain Marvel, I thoroughly enjoyed it regardless of its tie-in to Marvel's big event.
Apparently, somebody at S.H.I.E.L.D. noticed that Ms. Marvel has been in two places at once and Tony Stark suspects one of them is a Skrull dupe. That's where this issue picks up, as Carol unintentionally punches her way into the deep end of the Secret Invasion pool in more ways than one. Though she spends nearly the whole issue in her costume, Ms. Marvel #25 spends an awful lot of time focusing on Carol's personal life apart from superheroics. It's a smart use of the tie-in and the strength of Brian Reed's writing will most likely attract more than a few readers after Secret Invasion has come and gone. I had to check the cover to make sure I was actually reading Ms. Marvel and actually enjoying it on its own merits. Sure, the inner monologue is awkward and quirky at times, but the dialogue works for the most part.
Part of that is owed to Adriana Melo, the new series artist. The pencils in this issue are nothing short of spectacular. Oddly enough, I feel like this book looks exactly how a book featuring Ms. Marvel should look, if that makes any sense: very clean, traditional, and a little bit feminine. Melo is a perfect fit for this series.
Something of a pleasant surprise, honestly. It's sort of funny to see Carol Danvers treated so respectfully in her solo book and so ineptly in Mighty Avengers, both in the same week. Regardless, this issue is a clear winner.
Review Score: 8.4 Impressive
