It has been reported by other websites too, including Newsarama. It's an interesting choice, and I think I like it (and her as an actress ^^). This also marks the first time a really famous actor is on a Marvel movie I think...

I am so glad to find this thread. Here is the proper place to air this quest ROBERT DOWNEY JR? ? WHAT?!?!?!?!? c'mon, I know that someone else has to agree Stark = tall and goodlooking Downey = short and trollish Plus Stark's weakness is alcohol not multiple drugs. We all know there is only one man to play Tony Stark. Tom Selleck, no matter how old he is.

Either of the other two actors I heard mentioned before him -Tom Cruise or Leonardo DiCaprio - would have worked better for me. I am no Cruise fan; I think he is an actor of limited ability, but I think he could make the whole "genius/billionaire playboy" work. And DiCaprio is a good actor and certainly good looking enough to be convincing.

One of the things that get me with this, and I would've been ticked by Cruise as well, is just like the saelection of Batman, size IS important. Stark is not a shorty.
I can't see shorter guys playing this role.
Maybe Downey will be able to bring the acting chops to make up for it, we'll see.

dredging this up again I want to say this. Selleck was in friends about 6 years ago, and still looked good. I could still see him in the armor. I can't honestly see anyone else in it. You think of Stark you get the image of him as he has always been in the books. You alwas see the stache. I hope I will wind up eating my words, I really do. But Downey is too short to fit the role for me. Even if he grows a moustache it'll be a different look. I've been waiting so long for this movie, and I'm dissappointed before I see it. Yes I know that's a crappy attitude and I need to wait and see but,...

I always envisioned a different Tom on the role: Cruise, and yes, I'm aware he's another shortie...

Holy cow, that actually looks just like the original "spam in a can" gray suit! Could it be that this film is actually going to try to stay close to its' comic roots? This has definitely increased my interest. Although of course, I hope/imagine we'll see the classic red and gold later on in the film.

My hope was not fading, I'm starting to get excited about this. They keep this up, this could be the best comic to movie transition since Spider-Man!

Can anyone seriously tell me they don't get a flash of that armour but gold and wonder what an original Avengers movie would be like?
PS: The Apocalypse hath come. Nutcase hath at last surpassed my post count.

Dicaprio can't grow a very Starkish mustache so I'd say he's out. I'm not sure if Tom Cruise can or can't but based on height, and him sorta bringing down all his projects with his wacko rep is unapealing as well.
I dunno about Downey Jr either tho, not particulariyl Starkish either. Maybe Selleck was the right idea, but too old now.

I am pretty much a Decaprio hater,.... but I think he would not have been a bad choice. He can play the playboy pretty well, and has lived an already Tony Stark style life.

The life of Hughes served as an inspiration for Tony Stark, but as originally drawn the biggest debt goes to Errol Flynn...

Well, Tom Cruise and Sylvester Stallone aren't tall either.
But careful film making techniques seem to make them LOOK taller in their movies... I assume the same will be done to make Robert Downy Jr. look the part. (or get short females to co-star, heh, heh)
I'll bet he pulls off the 'quirks, and eccentric traits of Tony. I wonder whom will be Jarvis.

Apparently Mr. Samuel L. Jackson has been signed to play.... you guessed it... Nick Fury in the Iron Man movie, with option to play the character in other Marvel Movies. It bother's me as a purest, the same way the Kingpin did in Daredevil. There's no reason to have Ultimate Nick Fury in the movies, but I guess the Marvel Pantheon isn't very diverse racially.
