The December issue of WIZARD quotes Avi Arad as saying that, with Marvel taking direct control of its movie production, they will be able to do an actual, live-action AVENGERS MOVIE, in addition to the upcoming Ultimates DVD (Feb.).
The characters Arad specifically mentioned will be available for it are Cap, Ant Man, Hawkeye, and Nick Fury, though he said there would be others.

Do you mean a cartoon movie or a real movie like Spider-Man, X-Men and so on ?

"live-action" - so yes, like Spider-Man, X-Men, etc.

Weird.
On one hand they don't think it's got a market, since it's gone to DVD direct, OTOH they're putting money into it.
Isn't somewhat obvious thet by avoiding the big screen very few people will pick it up, or hear about it?
As an Avenger fan, somewhat sad that our team of heart deserves no equal interest to X-Men, Hulk, Elektra, Iron Fist, Punisher, Daredevil, et al.

The Avengers are not having their best time comics-wise, but still if they go through the effort of doing a live action movie, they could do it for cinemas rather than for DVD. It may help to give new impulse to the comic. Strange cast as well... Nick Fury and three Avengers who don't require expensive special effects. Sounds like the bugjet will be low for this movie.

What has held Marvel back this long from moving on an Avengers live-action movie has simply been that most of the Avengers characters were optioned by different studios. So, for example, you might have had Iron Man with FOX, Cap with Paramount, Thor with someone else. So you couldn't do a movie with all of them together.
This stems from some really short-sighted decisions Marvel made in past years, basically underestimating the value of their properties and taking the quick cash for them (thus giving us all those really bad Marvel movies, prior to X-MEN).
Marvel's new business model is "we have valuable properties--our characters--and we're going to milk them for all they're worth." Thus comic books are now a very low priority for Marvel, compared to getting those characters into high-value movie and TV deals.
Marvel has now taken some of its tons of cash from the X-movies and Spidey movies and bought back the rights to make films of these characters. So, for the first time, they actually have the legal right to use a bunch of them together in one movie. Not all of them, I assume, but the ones named, plus more. Note that Arad noted those particular ones "AND OTHERS."
I assume they'll do solo Iron Man movies and Cap movies before using either of them in a group movie, though. It would make sense. Unfortunately, in my view.

I'm in two minds about this news. While I am a long time fan, it would be heart-breaking to see the characters done a disservice. Most of the superhero films to date have been very mediocre. Poor writing, bad casting, shoddy camera work...a hundred things could ruin an Avengers effort.
Captain America, Quicksilver, the Scarlet Witch, Goliath and Hawkeye MIGHT work, but I'd still be pining for the Big Three + the Vision and others.

With some exceptions, I liked the movies so far, but i agree that they should do some solo movies before doing the big Avengers movie. In this way they would not need to spend time in introducing the audience to every character (the way it happened in the first X-Men) and they could concentrare more on the plot. Of course there is also a risk of completely misinterpreting the Avengers, making them some sort of governative organization.

My thought is that they are probably doing an Avengers movie before any solo movies to test the waters. Somebody who doesn't like Iron Man would probably go see an Avengers movie with him in it if they liked other characters, while someone who doesn't him won't see a solo Iron Man movie. It's just a way to get fan reaction to characters before deciding on solo movies. And don't tell me Iron Man is "in production" already because it's supposedly has been for years...
