With the approximate December numbers out, I thought it was interesting to look back at Cap sales over the last year or so.
Civil War tie-ins: 10/06 Captain America #23 - 81,323 ( -7.9%) 11/06 Captain America #24 - 82,348 ( +1.3%)
Death: 03/07 Captain America #25 - 344,270 (+318.1%) 04/07 —
Since then: 05/07 Captain America #26 - 129,365 ( -62.4%) 06/07 Captain America #27 - 99,108 ( -23.4%) 07/07 Captain America #28 - 89,721 ( -9.5%) 08/07 Captain America #29 - 83,781 ( -6.6%) 09/07 Captain America #30 - 79,554 ( -5.0%) 10/07 Captain America #31 - 77,131 ( -3.0%) 11/07 Captain America #32 - 78,279 ) -?.?%)
There's a very interesting trend here, which is basically this- It's not going down much. This seems interesting to me because in March of 2007, we had half the internet saying there would be a sales collapse with Cap dead, and they'd have to bring him back soon because sales would plummet, blah blah, etc. While sales did undeniably fall massively in the first issue or two afterwards, as expected, it's also undeniable that the book was stabilising pretty quickly even prior to the new Cap, around 80,000 units. That's a tiny bit less than it was doing during Civil War, which was TWICE what it was doing regularly.
Not that I'm unbiased or anything, but I think maintaining doubled sales- especially now that we're going on 10 Cap-less months, and stabilising around that is better than anyone expected and a massive success. Expect the number to *RISE* once the new Cap hits this month.
So, while Marvel aren't totally clear yet, it seems very safe to say that yes, the death of Captain America was a gamble which paid off in droves for Marvel sales-wise.

Got that right heck Cap's death made the news and I'm sure that Joe Simon was so mad when he found out too bad no one told him that Cap was getting killed off.
