THE ANSWER IS (Spoilers ahoy) Iron Man offers the post to Clint, who turns it down. Clint is actually thoughtful and in character in this issue, unlike in New Avengers 30... Does this make sense to anybody? seriously. I'm not shooting the messenger here, and I understand that he turns it down, but as an abstract putting hawkeye as Cap is just silly. Clint Barton is a great avenger, great hero and great fighter, but with a wholly different skill set than Cap. It's like asking Lance Armstrong to be the new quarterback for the miami dolphins.

Well flcik through the issue before you judge it. It kinda makes sense the way it's presented given theri whole friendship etc.

Didn't Brubaker say he wanted to tell stories about the "Cap-less interregnum" for awhile? Given that, didn't readers already know Clint would turn this down?

Not really because it was looking quite likely we'd be following A Captain America in, say, the Avengers for a while.
Joe Q has already stated at least once, I believe that there will eventually be a new Captain America, I think it was implied once Death Of The Dream winds down.

I just read the issue and I liked it. I felt it was right on, as far as Clint's characterization. I also loved the mention of his old outfit with the skirt!

This issue rocked, no two ways about it.
BUT it first further mystifies me as to Bendis' characterization. THis is the Clint Barton I remember. It is not the Clint Barton who would say "Now let's go stuff the SHRA up Tony's ass! Whoo yeah! Because even though I've been dead and he's my old friend, I HATE him because I apparantly know everything that happened during my absence, enough to make a total damning judgement! And of course, this bill is completely his fault! YEAH!"
That just felt like Bendis giving in to the wishes of diehard fanboys and didn't make too much character sense.
I correctly pinned it as Clint, but I am VERY glad to seee (A) We will not have a new Captain America (B) The issue made great sense!
I also love that we're really following Iron Man; here it's HE who is bargaining and soon we'll see that descend to "Acceptance".
Best of the series so far, two thumbs up Mister Loeb! 8/10.

Well flcik through the issue before you judge it. It kinda makes sense the way it's presented given theri whole friendship etc. well that's why I said in the abstract not having read it. but look the fact that it is a good story isn't the point here. anyone can write a good one off. touch a few heartstrings, resonate with emotion, good pacing--as long as you're a good storyteller, it's fine. there are any number of silly batman and superman stories done as prestige imprints at DC, elseworlds stuff because there are hundreds of ways to tell a good story. but DC doesn't do them as part of the canon because just because you can tell a good story doesn't mean you should go down some of these paths because eventually they do more harm than good. sometimes it's not just can I tell a good story from this, it's also should I tell that story?

Well it's not presented as "Iron Man thinks Clint should be the next Captain America". It's presented as "Iron Man isn't sure what to think and is trying to cope with the death of his TWO BEST FRIENDS in recent months and is coping in his own strange way". THat's why he offers the role.

I liked it. They showed that Clint COULD be the new Captain America, but he eventually decided that it wasn't right for him to take the job.
It also seemed to be aware of most of the recent storylines of the characters it showed, and it has become clear that this takes place before both the the current NA and MA story arcs. (Which means MAs Ultron arc happens between the end of Fallen son and when Hawkeye becomes the New Ronin if I'm not mistaken)

Who the heck is Tony, that he should be offering anyone the role of Captain America??

Actually, I think it has to take place AFTER.
Because Tony says "If you RETURN to Luke and Cage..." etc, and the Mighty Avengers are already formed.

now that you bring up those points, all I can think is that Fallen Son/Mighty/New just don't intermingle to create any reasonable continuity, unless we see that fallen son takes place in between parts of both mighty and new, which could be the place with the next few issues. (Also the end to the current mighty arc might shed some light, or wreak more confusion after it is complete)

I finally read this and I officially give up. I wrote out this long rebuttal to the piece, quoting a dozen different stories and how so much is out of character. yet I killed all that text because it's just not worth it. because those who want to enjoy this story will gloss over past events or reference one story out of thirty years where the character did something that might lead one to believe this sort of thing is possible. and they've got a right to it. they can enjoy it any way they want. marvel prints it, they buy it, that's the way it goes. but I think reading this comic actually killed my enjoyment for reading comics. it's just every dire, dreadful, unhappy and morose thing about marvel to me. the humorless, dark universe these characters live in is just not enjoyable to me in any way shape or form.
