ISSUE ONE: DEFIANT[/u]
Doom's Deconstruction:Grey Gargoyle runs through New York. Above, someone on wings looks down and communicates, plotting Gargoyle's takedown. A mysterious figure leaps in and after a quick battle, Gargoyle is shrunk to a tiny size and we see a large figure in a costume with yellow googles looming over, saying "Tell them... tell your friends... tell EVERYONE. This is only the beginning!"
Elsewhere, Wind Dancer (real name- Sofia) flies through the skies, emnjoying herself. Suddenly she sees a giant figure and falls... only to bolt awake on a train, in a normal outfit. She recalls that she has had the dream yet again and walks dejectedly through the streets, passing a "Thunderbolts Toys" logo and a giant "Registration- It's The Law!" poster. She then meets her friendly neighbourhood... er... bum- who she knows well, "Sammy" and who gives her a small communication device he's been paid to give her.
She reads it and someone communicates with her, patching into her Mp 3 player. As she passes Tony Stark on TV, some costumed figures fly overhead and she passes a Thunderbolts... burger... add. The myserious person basically tells her that he knows who she is- a mutant who lost her powers on M-Day who says the world needs help.
We then see some police. THey banter a bit and find the tiny, shrunken Grey Gargoyle with a card saying "NW". THey wonder who did it and talk about their relationship with SHIELD before they look into an alley and see a giant spray-painted logo: "The NEW WARRIORS WERE HERE!" It's actually pretty awesome font- the N and the W appear to be 3-dimensional sides of the same shape, the "E" is lodged into the top of the N and the two Ws are inside one another.
At a café, Tony Stark promises to take in the mysterious New Warriors as two people watching on the TV argue about how sincere he is- one thinks hes great, the other says he's power mad. Sofia then arrives for her job. After some banter with the chef and customers, she's told that one of the customers- a guy named Barry- seems to have the hots for her, so they arrange a date.
Back at her house later, Sofia is contacted again by the mysterious person who says they're opposed to this new world order and part of a group. She works out that they must be the vigilante group, and they ask her to join them. They say not all heroes have powers and she should cancel her date. She asks why she should ggive it all up to help them, they reply- becauise she WANTS to. Elsewhere, the police find someone tied up in what APPEARS to be old Spidey's web fluid...
Sofia meets Barry on her way to a meeting with the mysterious group. She discovers he's part of it and slaps him. However, he tells her he's not who she thinks- he's actually Beak from the New X-Men, depowered into human form after M-Day. He then recruits her and takes her on a portal into the HQ of the Warriors. Anotrher voice says "Hello, Sofia." She turns and her eyes widen. "But you're...dead..." she breathes slowly.
"Glad you could make it." replies Night Thrasher.
The View of Doom: FIrst thing to note is the slow pace. Avengers: The Initiative moved way too fast as it was originally a limited series. Omega Flight moved way too slow as it was originally an ongoing. THIS was and still is an ongoing, and has the pace down fine as long as it stays that way. Not much happens, and we're being introduced to the team from the outside, which is fine. IN fact, all we know of the team is that it has Beak- depowered, Night Thrasher, (Old or New? Looks new.) Person-Who-Can-Shrink-People (whoever they are) and Flying Person. Plus, presumably, Sofia.
Nice to see Iron Man as not a psychopathic drooling madman. The entire PREMISE of this series is about resisting the Initiative but from what little we see of him I think Tony Stark seems to be handled fairly even-handedly which is both delight and relief. Although really, though it's not this book's fault and has been established in others, there are HUNDREDS of good slogans to use so why the Hell resort to "Registration- IT'S THE LAW!" Tony Stark HAS to hire new PR people.
One thing I like is that we really see inside Sofia's head. We see the world she lives in, we feel for her. This is a book without a bigtime famous creative team and with a cast mostly comprised of unknowns so making it an ongoing was courageous- most readers today know the name from the guys who got BLOWN UP in the civil War. It won't be a top seller and I'd anticipate a big dropoff after issue 1 based on the pacve but I sincerely hope this book does well enough to sustain itself because it's a good read.
Plotting, characterization was fine, pacing a tad slow. Most of the characters were walking clichés which was wince inducing, but they're still fleshed out surprisingly well and the dialogue was good. Combine it with hook cliffhanger and you have a very good book- but there's nothing to distinguish it or make it special. Still, I'll pick up at least the next few which I had no plans to do before so good work by Grevioux. Oh, and art is LOVELY as I've come to expect from Paco Medina.
Doom Decrees That This Issue SHalt Be Given... Eight Gold Dooms Out Of Ten.
