From Joe Quesada. Apparently it won't be Carol Danvers, as I had previously thought, since she is supposedly getting her own series under the MS MARVEL name (yaaay!). Thoughts? --Van
JQ: "Well, a lot of fans have been asking for the return of Captain Marvel. I guess what they don't know is that Captain Marvel has been back for some time now, it's just that no one has noticed or figured it out yet [laughs].
JQ: We're not talking about his son, we're talking about a new Captain. I really can't say anymore, but the character's already been introduced in the Marvel Universe.

I remember the times where:
Captain Marvel was Captain Marvel.
Photon was Photon.
Miss Marvel was Miss Marvel.
I find it weird to see Joe Q talk about the Marvel Universe... which one? The Ultimate? The disassembled? The Post-Decimation? Each book that's pretty much it's own Universe? The delayed books Universe?
Oy.
I like it how he laughs as he destroys an entire 40 yold universe. Well, at least he's happy, which i guess it's what Marvel is really there for, as well as we the poor schmuck plucking down the cash.
Lord, i don't think i can even muster the will to care anymore.
Captain britain has been the same spectacle of nonsensicality. How about treating these characters with respect and giving them a good writer and a chance - Oh wait, no time for that, Quesadilla's got to have it's laughs and we, decade-old costumers, shouldn't poop on it's frat party.
The weekly fests at Newsarama are really just taunting sessions more than interviews with any real information. No wonder DC doesn't do them.

I have gone through every MU-set issue published by Marvel in the past year and can find nothing to suggest a new Captain Marvel bearing any resemblance to Mar/Genis/Carol/Monica-style Cap Marvels.
There is just as much evidence out there for it to be the new Swordsman, Ronin or even Rachel Summers or Gravity. I bet they'll end up saying "We dropped clues but no-one ever picked them up! Steve Rogers' illegitimate daughter is... Captain Marvel! (The clue was the ham and pineapple pizza Steve ate on page eight of Captain America V.1 #17.)"
*sigh*

Billy Batson will no longer be Captain Marvel!? Wow, I wonder who they will get to fill his shoes. Of course, there is always Mary Marvel of Captain Marvel Jr. James W. Hooper "Captain Paramedic"

Clearly there will be some connection to Hulkling... that's all I will say for now.

I worded that poorly-- I should have said, "That's all the speculating I will do for now."
But why not speculate?
Okay, so: Based on what we saw in YOUNG AVENGERS and what I've read here and there on the Web, my gut instinct is that it will be Hulkling, after he finds out the full truth about himself (probably during the upcoming second Kree-Skrull War). I have a hunch he will turn out to be the son of Mar-Vell and the half-brother of Genis, on one side, and a Skrull to be named later, on the other.
(Though how that's even possible is... well, it's comics...)
In fact, if that's the case, wouldn't he make the perfect "Rick Jones" character, this time around, to end the war and reconcile the two sides? Especially if his unknown "real mother" turns out to be someone as important to the Skrulls as Mar-Vell was to the Kree?
Who is "mom?" Could be anyone-- they're shapeshifters. Maybe the empress or something? Did Mar-Vell know she was a Skrull? If so, who would Mar-Vell have been, um... having relations with on that side, on purpose? If not, they could have pretended to be Elysius, for example.
And when the dust settles, Hulkling-become-Captain Marvel takes up his dad's mantle, but now working to maintain the peace for both sides, Kree and Skrull.
That's my guess. But do I have inside info that makes me "know" any of this? No.

wow.....my guess was that Hulking's dad was Mar-Vell, even before I knew anything about this new Captain Marvel. Wow...I'm shocked that you speculated the same thing and with news that there's a new Cap Marvel coming....well, looks like it makes even more sense.....i can't believe there's a chance i guessed it right...lol

A problem for the Hulkling-as-Captain-Marvel theory is that Joe Q said the new Captain Marvel is not Mar-Vell’s son...but then, Joe Q is no wordsmith, and he might have meant to exclude Genis-Vell specifically (the only known son of Mar-Vell at the time), rather than to exclude any son of Mar-Vell.

Didn´t read the story yet, but just checked the file of Phyla. I´m not very familiar with the whole Peter Davis/Genis stuff so I didn´t know her character at all.
And, not sure what you´re meaning, I didn´t know that she was called Captain Marvel too. Reading the file I find the explanation (getting the "promotion" by her mother) quite weak. But then, I know nothing about her.
