Wow--what a great resource--thanks for posting the link! I see the Humus Sapien you refer to, in issue #3. I can't believe I never subscribed to FOOM.
Seeing this made me remember an acquaintaince telling us years ago she helped write a piece for FOOM- -so I just checked and what do you know--it's listed in the contents for #13, "Women in Daredevil's Life!" A little googling reveals she did indeed co-author it (her name is Naomi Basner and she also wrote a Clea ons-shot story for Marvel way back when.)

There are several FOOM-related posters for sale on ebay right now. They seem to all be reproductions of existing art (cover to Sub-Mariner #1, for example). Most look to be colored for use with black lights (?).
And thanks for the link, Tana -- very cool information. Fans/collectors do history a great service when they create websites like that!!

All this talk about FOOM has got me going crazy trying to remember where I put those books, and especially, the poster! That poster hung on my wall for at least a couple of years. I know it is falling apart but I was thinking it'd be nice to frame it.
Apparently there is some sort of controversy over Steranko's original art for the poster. I can't recall the details, but I believe the person who owns the art now is claiming it is his fair and square, while Steranko says he never intended to get rid of it.

That issue makes for wonderful anecdotal history! Every now and again there is a story being told by an aged Silver Age artist about lost art, or art given back that was in turn just given away because it was thought then that there was no financial value to it... And then they found out they'd been screwed over in the secondary market.

According to the Kirby bio "Tales to Astonish", Steranko was one of the few during the 60s who made a stink about who owned his original artwork...most of the others (who were older artists like Jack and didn't want to rock the boat and jeopardize steady work) kept quiet, or at least didn't make these demands. But Steranko, who was not beholden to the comics industry, was one of the first to demand his art back (supposedly some kind of deal was struck with Marvel)...even before Adams did.
Tana: Forgot to mention, I exalted you the other day for the FOOM link. As mentioned, thanks for posting it; it's fantastic!

Thanks for the exalt Sharkar. I'll see if I can locate that information about Steranko when I have some more time. Also, I'll try to find a link to that FOOM poster. It was just so cool!

Interesting reading! Thanks for posting the link, von Bek. I saw the ebay listing earlier today of the FOOM poster by Steranko (as dlw mentioned) and the seller, of course, is contesting the claims made by Steranko. This is getting ugly... Do any of you who came of comics-reading age during the Bronze Age remember the black and white self-portait posters by four Marvel pencilers (artists surrounded by their characters)? These may only have been sold during the Silver Age. I bought them, it was sold as a set...it was John Buscema, Kirby, Romita and--Herb Trimpe?? IIRC, these "posters"were just a bit larger than 8 1/2" by 11", and as mentioned, weren't even in color. Definitely not as impressive as the FOOM poster!

I have seen those posters, and they are really cool. Yeah, Trimpe seems an odd choice to fit in with the other three giants. Even Sal would have been a better selection by the powers-that-be. Gene Colan was around then, as was George Tuska.
After seeing the FOOM poster on the link that von Bek provided, I recalled having seen it before. It reminds me of a poster advertising a Marvel Comicon in NYC, circa 1974-75. Runs in my mind that that poster might have been an artist jam using existing art. I recall seeing it in ads in Marvels of that era.

Kudos to Von Bek for beating me to the web search! Yes, that is the glorious poster I remember. Sharkar, I do recall the Marvel artist posters you mention. It seems to me those may have come out around the same general time as some other Marvel posters. I recall my brother and I got a set of Spider-Man and his villain posters, also black and white (which we immediately remedied by getting out the crayons!) and about 8 1/2 X 11. What I really wish I had was those large color posters advertised in some of the books with Fantastic Four, Thor, etc. Those looked pretty nice! Doug, you mention the Marvel Comic Con poster by John Buscema, if I am thinking of the same thing? I remember getting it along with a button and Stan Lee t-shirt as part of a mail order package. This would have been mid 70's I think. The poster was really nice, tons of characters all by Big John. Edit: a quick search turned this up: www.drstrange.nl/drstrange/realm/stuff/marvelcomiccon75.htmThat's the one I had! Edit 2: the hits just keep coming - what a fantastic guide! Wish I had that MMMS stuff, but just a bit before my time! reviews.ebay.com/How-To-Buy-Sell-FOOM-Marvelmania-amp-MMMS-Fan-Club-Items_W0QQugidZ10000000000916242

It's lunchtime, I'm at school, and our new filter blocks your link to the poster as "Cult/Occult". Well, yeah! He's a Master of the Mystic Arts!! Apparently the software designer thinks that's bad.
Can you post the picture for me, Tana?? Thanks!

My guess is that it's fine, but alas, I will have to wait until I get home to view it. It's blocked as well. And by the way, just to show you how well this stupid thing works, your avatar with the green cheesecake is blocked, too!!
Arrgghhhh!!
But thanks, anyway. I will tell you if it's the poster I was thinking of later today...

Reminds me of the time at one of my old jobs where a guy went to a website about "voo-doo economics" and got flagged for going to an occult website!

I was able to see the image from the drstrange site by backdooring a search (ie -- dumbed into it). While the image is small from the search, it is the poster I was thinking of!
There is another one from the same era, IIRC, that was a jam. I have no idea now where or when I saw it.

That's a really nice collection. I like that they include books other than the main title. I have to get that for the BF - he loved the SSoSV but sold all those books in college!

The creator credits are a nice mix of pretty talented people. Not "hall of famers", mind you, but indicative of some solid '70's work -- many at Marvel, too.

Oh wow -- I thought I had all their appearances, just the main series and one of the specials. I remember how issue 15 ended kind of at a cliffhanger. The Villains had their plan finally come together and they went off to Earth 2 to fight heroes who were unaccustomed to deeating them. Then the series ended. Does anybody know if the JLA appearnces continue this story? I got me a new hot want list now.
I was just about to remark, "the thread that won't die" but now I'm just thanking my lucky stars that it hasn't. I'm on the hunt.

There will always be stuff to talk about in this thread! Partridge Family comics... The Brady Bunch cartoon... We haven't even broached the subject of The Banana Splits yet. Sheesh! ;D

Me and my negative attitude!
I was reading a Marvel Two-in-One yesterday, and Thing's in the airport, coming back from wherever he was last issue. In the lobby, there's a bunch of protestors. Their signs are "Food Causes Cancer," "Bring Back Stan Lee," and "Nuke the Whales."

Now we're talking my era. I was a member of F.O.O.M., although in the back of my mind I wondered if that made me an accessory to old Fin Fang Foom, and before that I considered myself a member of the Merry Marvel Marching Society which is ironic now since I've retired due to MS. Stan Lee's affection for alliteration can be attributed to my affliction. LOL. I never got into the posters much. Farrah Fawcett was the only thing hangin' on my wall but the one ting I did buy was the limited edition Spider-man Bronze Coin complete with chain. I never wore it as a necklace--I had puka shells for that--but it did hang from the rearview mirror of my 1973 Roadrunner.
and to be honest about it, when Giant Size X-men #1 debuted in 76, I was a big Dave Cockrum fan and I went to Readmore's Book Store and I bought all twelve issues that were left on the counter. I then spent twelve years in the army from 78 to 90, left and went to I.U. where I wound up a part time manager at a comic book shop. To get my wife and I through college and raise our three daughters, one by one I sold them. I have but two left.
Oh well. . . no one ever wanted to buy the Howard the Duck #1's!

Nice Dave. I always wished I'd been old enough to experience the MMMS, as it sounded more intimate and fun than FOOM. I mean, they made 45's* for the fan club with the bullpen staff!

I was trying to go through hula hoops to find websites that WEREN'T blocked by the servers, for the kids to use! Some websites have embedded videos... and unfortunately, the school filter has "streaming media" as one of its filters. Whoops, looks like I've gone overboard in messages today!
