All-Time Favorite would have to be Perez. I've been catching up on Vol. 3 with Busiek and his work there is outstanding. Character definitions, their emotional and visual responses, the action scenes, the level of detail in his backgrounds is unreal. The man draws the best-looking Wanda ever. Personal Favorites would be Al Milgrom and John Buscema. They were the mainstay artists when I started reading the Avengers back in the 80s. Milgrom provided solid consistent art and is a great storyteller. Buscema, with Tom Palmer, made great stories such as Under Siege even better. Love it. Marvel Boy, I truly love the fact that you claim Al Milgrom as one of your personal favorites. Once again proving the old "imprinting" theory that the team/writer/artist on duty when the book first pulls you in will always be "your own" team/writer/artist for the book. Ol' Al does get a lot of flak on this board- certainly no small amount from me, as he's one of my least favorite artists on the title- but there have been one or two folks who have spoken up for him. And I think that's GREAT. I don't think I can emphasize that enough. Particularly in Al's case, because I've always kind of been fond of him (as a beloved Marvel maid-of-all-work), even when I didn't care for his penciling. Nope, in matters of personal taste, it's practically one's duty to hold high their banner of preference. . . even if it's not perceived to be the most popular one. (Remember, I'm the guy who stuck with the Hulk FOREVER-!) My own favorite artist on the book? Pfft-- I truly couldn't pick one. And could make strong cases for so many. John Buscema, Sal Buscema, Neal Adams, John Byrne, George Perez, Alan Davis (surprised we don't hear him mentioned more often), Steve Epting--- these guys ALL did great work during their tenures. John B would probably get my vote, but again only because of that "imprinting" effect. HB [PS-- 2 hrs later w/ a mod-- I happened to glance back up this thread, and was relieved to see that I expressed pretty much the same opinions about 21 months or so ago! Believe me, I am embarrassingly capable of forming completely opposing opinions over the course of time, w/out remembering anything I've said before-!!)

I am glad this thread was revived. It's very interesting to see everyone's opinions.
I couldn't choose between Byrne and Perez at gun point. It would be like choosing between twin children. Whatever spatial/temporal distortions are required to allow them both to simultaneously occupy the number one spot, make it so.
I'm reading around in the J. Buscema/Palmer era right now and that team may be number 2. I'm torn there too, because I love the wild energy of early Don Heck.

I don't know if anyone else other than HB & me are in the mid-Atlantic, but all the Perez love in this thread reminds me that he is on the list for this year's Baltimore Comic-Con in September. I'm hoping to make it.

Milgrom may not have the flash of Jim Lee nor the intricacy of Perez, but to me, he provides substance over style. No crazy panel layouts, just solid graphic storytelling (and never any confusion over which character is whom)
Have always loved Perez, from Avengers to New Titans to Wonder Woman to Crisis, you name it. I had the honor of meeting Perez a number of years ago at HeroesCon. A fine gentleman and human being. ;D

Could've sworn I've replied to a thread on this subject years ago but can't find any comments by me here -so here goes.
I guess Byrne would be my favourite. Perez would be number 2 and Big John Buscema only just being edged out to number 3.
Between them I'd say they're the definitive Avengers artists IMO.
As mentioned -whilst he didn't do many the impact and influence of Neal Adams can't be overstated. Jim Starlin's work on Annual 7 is also something that stands out as embodying the title.
Others I like: Bob Hall and grudgingly Deodato (I agree wholeheartedly with humanbelly's perceptive remarks about him here -I'm really not a fan of the generic Jim Lee clones of that era but his art manages to have something a bit more about it despite quite obviously being of that ilk).
In my view Byrne's a much more sensitive portrayer of character than Perez, probably the finest 'humanistic' comic artist I've seen really giving them warmth and presence when he's at his best. Regarding the question about Perez's other work I'd say that the peak of his career from an artistic standpoint are Crisis on Infinite Earths and Wonder Woman.
FWIW, my favourite comic artists are John Romita Jr and Walt Simonson, but I've never really thought that they were particularly suited to a title like The Avengers.

Ultron--I met George Perez many times and he is very down-to-earth, good-natured, and seems genuinely thrilled that people love his work. He has ZERO artist attitude. The first time I met him, it seemed like I'd known him my whole life. He's that kinda guy.

I thought about this thread while listening to George Perez' talk at Baltimore Comic-Con today. He explained why he has been so grateful for his career. He said that 4 years in, at age 23, he had a nerve condition in his drawing hand and thought his career was over. His publisher paid for treatment and he got his career back and has appreciated everything that has happened since then as gravy. A great attitude. Here's George when he got to his first run on The Avengers:

Yep, Wundy I'm so glad you got up there to this Con. This was going to be a huge chance for me--- was going to get Herb Trimpe's autograph and probably talk his ear off and do "convention-y" things. But. . . HBWife's out of town at a conference. . . and the (much-maligned) HBGirl had worked her behind off at school for the past two weeks and finally had a break. . .
So, we had an 11-hour Doctor Who marathon on Saturday, and I took her and one of her pals to a theatrical happening and Z-Burger on Sunday. . . and it was (I have to confess-- after all of my bluster--!) a 5-star delightful weekend. I'm afraid Baltimore Con could only have come in a distant second for me. (Would've been kinda cool to bump into ya though, eh?)
But hey- did you manage to touch base w/ any old artists/writers/creators? Anyone nicer than expected? Or not-nicer? Or outright loopier? Good old Perez just seems to come across as the guy you'd perpetually invite over on Labor Day, doesn't he?

Great story and thanks for the photo, Wundy! Sounds like you had a good time at the Con. Do you have any more pics/anecdotes that you can share here? It was indeed a good time. I'd never done the con thing before. I put a few more photos over on Comic Vine: www.comicvine.com/forums/gen-discussion-1/some-baltimore-comic-con-cosplay-1495091/I also really enjoyed listening to Mark Waid during the Marvel panel. He talked about how he prepares to write Daredevil. Said that whenever he walks into a new situation, he's asking himself how Matt Murdoch would perceive that place/event. He really strives to put himself in the shoes of the character. He also spoke to representatives from organizations for the blind, to better inform how to handle a blind character with insight and sensitivity. Plus he's just a very engaging, entertaining guy to listen to. Waid also made some interesting points about writing Captain America in the current era of extreme political polarization. Everyone projects their own idea of what the flag should stand for onto Steve. Then they get mad at the writer if the writer thinks Steve wouldn't think like the reader. Waid sounded kind of glad he's not writing Cap right now. His take is that Steve would be a New Deal Democrat (which would be a Republican moderate today) based on the time he grew up and first served. He thinks that if he wrote Cap that way, hard core conservatives would rage about it.

We should touch base about which day each plans to go. While the Herb Trimpe line was surprisingly short, I think you absolutely made the right choice. We took a quick pass through Artist Alley and didn't stop anywhere. I was enjoying the company of WundagoreDescended and he's not into creators yet. He wanted to look at the cool stuff in the vendor sections. Ivan Brandon (Secret Invasion - Home Invasion) was on that side and we got to meet him briefly and get a signed trade (he's nice enough). Perez could move in next door. I wouldn't even press him for panel previews. Just seems like a good guy to talk with over the fence.

When I met Perez at a Con last year, I had the exact same feeling. I can't imagine anyone who could seem more genuine. There doesn't seem to be an ounce of conceit about him even though his talent gives him every justification for it to be there.

Wow, that's a great story about that publisher helping Perez out with his medical issues. I'd love to meet Herb Trimpe too. The man was a workhorse for Marvel, one of the most consistent stable artists they ever had. Loved his work on G.I. Joe among other many titles. I met Kurt Busiek at HeroesCon awhile back. Very nice guy, no pretensions, no ego, just loves talking about comics. On a more recent note, some sad news concerning Perez: www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=47959My wishes and thoughts for him for his continued health and recovery. He recently signed an exclusive contract with BOOM! and they just announced an early press release for his first original work for them. Really looking forward to it.
