Ign reviews Ultimates 3 #3.
No one can ever accuse Jeph Loeb of holding back in terms of his writing on Ultimates 3. Pretty much anything can and probably will happen sooner or later, be it ill-advised or not. This issue actually takes it down a notch in terms of violence, as we get a mostly exposition filled adventure this time. We learn additional background on Wanda and Pietro's "bond", but are thankfully spared any blatant details. For those of you worried that wordy explanation would lessen the umm…boobtacularness of the issue, don't you worry, since Loeb added some unnecessary (and unnecessarily detailed…) smut just for you.
The dialogue is a marked improvement from last issue, since you at least need to read it to understand what's going on this time, but it still only gets across the bare minimum. I think the Robot Devil put it best when he said "Your (dialogue) lacks subtlety! You can't just have your characters announce how they feel! That makes me feel angry!" I think I gave up on this series at the point Captain America communicated with a grunt. Behind the theatrics and swagger, there's just nothing there to draw me in. These are the characters that I used to enjoy in name only, hollow shells of what they used to be. The new additions bring nothing to the table either, unless you find the Black Panther never saying anything in some way compelling. With the downtime in this issue, there was a perfectly good opportunity to add some much needed characterization, but all that's there is what we've seen before (Hawkeye doesn't enjoy living, etc.). I wouldn't be as bothered if this were an ongoing series that had an extended period to delve into the characters, but that's not the case here where there are only two issues left after this.
While I'm not the biggest fan of his work, Joe Madureira is the perfect choice for a series like this. Everything is done in a rich, over-the-top style that's flashy in all the right ways. There isn't a better artist to draw huge muscles, breasts, and constant angry glaring. I'm still hoping I'll wake up tomorrow, and I'll find out this was a fever dream "What If" gone wrong, but the hopes of that happening are pretty dim at this point.
Review Score:3.8 Bad
