Is this for real? or another cruel joke!?! I checked out the Diamond list of what's out tomorrow and low and behold, #13 is on the list. I won't hold my breath but it would be cool!

I might have bought this when I could still remember what was happening, but I won't spend money on this now. The wait really drained away my interest in the Ultimates.
All the same, I'm sure it'll be a solid read with crazy good art.

Got it, read it...and it was OK. I don't know how much effect the long delay has on my feelings but I thought it was OK, not spectacular. Let me say I did re-read all the previous issues this week, just so I could remember all the plot details. This issue seems to wrap things up pretty nicely, but wasn't quite as satisfying as I would like. I think perhaps it's just that the whole series was sort of on overdrive, and after issue 12, there was no place higher to go.
What I found sadly ironic was that {SPOILER} the Ultimates have decided to go independent and disconnect themselves from the military and government. They realize their power is too much for any single government to control, and should instead be devoted to protecting the entire world. So while the hyper-realistic Ultimates free themselves of government control, our regular universe heroes sign up to be a super-military.

In my humble view, "Grand Theft America" is one of the best comic stories in over a decade. Loved the conclusion, LOTS OF payoff.
Particularly loved Mark Millar going out of his way to disprove Balok's theory that half the reason for civil war was for the 616 to be ultimised since that sold more. If that was true, why 616-inise the ULtimates? Could it possibly be that story comes first?

If that was true, why 616-inise the ULtimates? Could it possibly be that story comes first? Kind of a simplistic way to look at it. I'd say the Ultimization has far more to do with attitude than one storyline-- it's more the way the gov't interacts with heroes; how they've got a much more antagonistic relationship, and the conspiracies and human casualties, etc. 616 just feels like a place where everyone is on edge and in danger and not trusting each other. and that's what I get from the Ultimates which is why I've never been a fan. Plus isn't Loeb coming on and doesn't he do far less of this sort of thing? In fact this discussion on popcultureshock pretty much says as much popcultureshock.com/pcs/forums/t10397-ultimates-vol-3-will-it-live-up-to-expectations.htmlBut in any case, if it were just about superheroes and the gov't being too heavy, heck I wouldn't have been able to read books like THUNDER Agents years ago. No, it has more to do with the atmosphere the writer creates and attitude the writer brings.

I read this a couple of days ago and found it a fitting end to 25 issues of good storytelling and fantastic art. Hitch cut loose in this finale, and the gatefold was a nice touch -- made me feel somewhat like a bone to those of us who waited so long, but a nice add-in nonetheless. Despite the long intervals between issues, I am sad to see these creators leave this book. I know we've discussed whether or not these are the Avengers, an abomination, or just a "guilty pleasure" (as Van once posited) -- I have personally gained much more satisfaction from this than from anything else under the name "Avengers" put out in the past four years.
So, thanks to Mark and Brian -- it was a lot of fun!

It would make a welcome poster, should Marvel choose to market it in a larger format. The covers to issues #12 and #13 were stunning as well!

I'll say you took a break. Well, glad to have you back. You have some catching up to do!
And, yes, Ultimates was a great series under Millar and Hitch. I am not overly optimistic about the third installment, though.
