So anyway... just read my maybe free first run of Ultimates. I have to say really well done. As an alternate earth, what if, series it was great! I can see how Marvel has shifted the main comic lines to be a little more like this, the ultra violence and more realistic character tones. My main problem is what's up with the Hulk??? Aside from wanting to destroy everything, why the also want to screw and eat everything? I expected to see him dry humping a tank or something.....

Also worth note is Brian K. Vaughn's run on Ultimate X-men, more hit and miss than the other ultimate series in my opinion, but Vaughn does it well.

AA- that's pretty much what Ultimate Hulk is. Totally psycho and.. er... horny. Did you read 1-6 or 1-12? (Oh, and Ultimates 2 is even better. And I don't see how anyone can claim after Civil War 7, Ultimates and Ultimates 2 that Mark Millar cannot write giant awesome battles )

read 1-12 I have the 2nd series, just haven't gotten to it yet. I never said Millar couldn't write good action. I thought it was very well done.

HOLY CRAP!
This was some of the more enjoyable reading I've had in comics. With the foreknowledge of the modernizing of characters in hand I jumped in and really had a good time reading the Ultimates vol1.
I found the artwork very enjoyable the storyline was interesting and followable and the characterizations were outstanding:
Hulk- it just stands to reason that his base desires would be aumented along with those other parts of his psyche.
Cap- playing the part of the tired Knight. Him going after Pym makes me wander why they didn't do that the first time around.
Thor as a hippie is soooo fun.
I just really liked the run and thank you guys for pointing me toward it.

I loved the Ultimates too NC!! If you liked that, you'd probably love Mark Millar's 'The Authority" run as well. MM does a story arch where The Authority have to fight an evil Jack Kirby mad scientist who creates an alternate reality Avengers. It really is very, very good. Probably the best alternate take on the Avengers I've ever seen.

I now have all the Ultimate stuff and enjoy almost all of it.
Bobc, Thanks for pointing that Authority run. I'm surely going to look into it.

It has to be said though, I LOVE ultimate Iron Man. It takes Tony's "playboy" characteristics to brilliant and wild extremes.
Though the new, incredibly sarcastic Jarvis is great too....
And who doesn't love the pure badassery of ultimate Cap?
Thor the hippy's pretty awesome....
Ultimate Fury has all the badass of the actor he's based on...
Ah Hell, the Ultimates just have one of my favourite distinctive team line-ups there is! The personalities are so totally different and enjoyable that it's amazing the team works!

Ultimates 1 and 2 were both very enjoyable reads. The characters aren't the 616 characters, but since you know that going in, you try to understand them as the characters they are, and they work well. I would probably not have enjoyed these stories and reimaginings had they taken place in the 616 universe.
I fear that Bendis will ruin Spider-Man for me. Since Spidey is one of my favorite characters and I don't like most of what Bendis writes, I've given USM a wide berth.

as a re-imagining, USM might be the best of the Ultimate Universe. It keeps all the important elements of Spidey, but keeps him in highschool where Bendis can write some good teen drama, (and the dialogue issues of NA and MA seem less prominent because writing dialogue mainly for spidey and school kids is a good fit for Bendis style.)
He also has a good thing going with Bagley which encompases a 100+ issues of USM.

I'll tell you something else. With the warnings you folks gave me I was expecting much more graphic stuff.
I would feel more comfortable with my kids reading USM than any thing else in 616 right now.

The warnings were mostly for "The Ultimates" though, right? I can't think of anything too bad about USM....

Ultimate FF is pretty tame, too. But yeah, The Ultimates is very graphic throughout the Millar/Hitch run.

I've read through all of my ulrimate material except the x-men stuff. Im deep into other things right now. It also could be because I've never been a huge follower of mutant stuff. I will probably be starting in on that this week-end.
I still haven't really read anything that made me go "no that was a complete waste of my time"
except for the wolverine/hulk thing that they killed off.
