I’ve previously suggested the possibility of the Runaways and the Young Avengers swapping some members, maybe in the upcoming Civil War: Young Avengers & Runaways limited series. A swap or one-way defection is purely speculation. But why not speculate? ;D If there were to be one or more defections between the two teams, who might make the switch?
In the Young Avengers Special, Cassie Lang (Stature) reveals that she’s considered hooking up with the Runaways as an alternative to the Young Avengers. So, she’s a possibility. Would they accept her? The Runaways’ profile is that they are the children of super-villains. Cassie doesn’t exactly qualify—granted, her father was a convicted criminal, but he reformed and then got into the super-powers game. But her troubled relationship with her remaining family—a hostile stepfather and a mother who sides with him—might earn her sufficient sympathy. (Cf. Molly’s invitation to some other kids with neither super-abilities nor super-parents.)
I’m not yet convinced that Billy Kaplan (Wiccan) and Tommy Shepherd (is he a Young Avenger yet?) are the long-lost children of the Scarlet Witch, but let’s assume they are. Given Wanda’s wackiness of late, I guess they would qualify as children of a super-villain. They’d also be grandchildren of two super-villains: Magneto on Wanda’s side and Ultron on the Vision’s side, if one considers Ultron the Vision’s father. (And that would make Runaway Victor their cousin once removed...) Of the twins, Tommy has greater problems with authority—and the law—and would make a better fit among the Runaways. Billy seems less likely to leave the Young Avengers behind, since it would mean leaving Hulkling.
But then again, maybe Hulkling would join the Runaways. Like them, he’s now an orphan. He might prefer to run away rather than be placed in some home or other. And while he’s not literally the child of super-villains, he is the scion of the Skrulls and the Kree, peoples who tend to act villainously toward Earth. (And his regal Skrull origins give him a connection to erstwhile Runaway Karolina Dean, who’s engaged to a Skrull prince [or princess].)
Going the other way, the various Runaways members seem less likely prospects for YA membership at this time. Still, I could see Victor Mancha possibly jumping ship—he’s still the outsider in his group, he has Avengers ties (of a checkered sort), and he actually has some respect for authorities like the Avengers.
Theoretically, any of the two teams’ members might trade places, depending on the events of Civil War and other happenings.
Your thoughts?
