The invasion is coming... or did it already happen? The Marvel Universe is about to find out as Brian Bendis and Leinil Yu kick off Secret Invasion this April. But along the way, clues will be dropped and pieces will be put in place. One critical place to discover more of this alien conspiracy is New Avengers: Illuminati #5.
For those unaware, the Illuminati is a clandestine gathering of Marvel's greatest minds. Iron Man. Charles Xavier. Namor. Black Bolt. Dr. Strange. Reed Richards. These five men have invaded foreign territories (the Skrull Empire), stolen all-powerful artifacts (the Infinity Gems), exiled friends (Hulk) and jailed rogue alien beings (Marvel Boy). Now they come face to face with a shocking discovery - a dead Skrull. But this isn't just any dead Skrull. It's one that has been masquerading as the villainous Elektra for an unknown period of time. No one, including the mystic ninja clan known as the Hand, had any idea this Skrull was there.
So now the team faces a dilemma. How do they prevent this... well, first off, what is this? What does this mean? What are the Skrulls doing? What do they want? Have the heroes lost before they've even started?
IGN is proud to host the debut of New Avengers: Illuminati #5 artwork. Jimmy Cheung is the master artist responsible for these pages. For quick hype-filled bits on what to expect, we dragged Brian Bendis and Brian Reed out from behind their computers for a quick update.
Brian Reed: "This is the issue where the Illuminati learn that the Secret Invasion has begun. We've been laying the groundwork for the next year of stories in the Marvel Universe with this whole mini-series - now readers get to see what we've been up to since that very first issue. Of course, we couldn't have done it without Jimmy Chueng, I can't imagine anyone else giving this story the kind of power Jimmy has, and I think when folks see the work he's put on the page in this final issue, well, I think they're going to love every panel."
Brian Bendis: "For those waiting patiently for a big chapter in the Skrull storyline currently running through the Avengers titles and into next year's mega hoo hah Secret Invasion... Here it is!!
"What this issue represents is a bookend to a story that started in the first issue of this mini-series. It's the first gathering of the Illuminati post-Civil War and post-World War Hulk, and it is top to bottom Jimmy Chueng's finest moment as a penciler."
And this is just the beginning. Can the Illuminati trust each other? Can they trust their allies? Can they even trust villains? Who is a Skrull? How long have people been missing?
New Avengers: Illuminati #5 is due in stores November 7, 2007. IGN will have the latest on this issue, further developments in the Avengers titles and complete coverage of Secret Invasion. Check back for more!
