Ign.com rates the future of New Avengers.
New Avengers
Current Creative Team:
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Leinil Yu
Start With: Issue #27 (February 2007)
Title Analysis: The longest running of the current Avengers titles is the most popular for a number of reasons. A team consisting of moneymakers like Wolverine and Spider-Man along with fan-favorites such as Iron Fist and Echo is one reason for the book's success. The book's roster was fractured and reassembled following Civil War, and this cast is certainly more familiar to readers who have been following the book since issue #1. More importantly, Brian Michael Bendis is using New Avengers to steer the Marvel Universe into a 2008 event. Issue #31 was promised to contain the most shocking event of any comic this year. Even if the newly discovered Skrull threat didn't immediately live up to the hype, the sheer potential of this storyline is undeniable. We just hope that Bendis doesn't spend too much time dwelling on Skrulls between now and next year's Secret Invasion. At times his Avengers do little more than channel the same conversations Internet fanboys around the world are having. Luckily, there's more to New Avengers than just Skrulls. Bendis has dug The Hood out of obscurity and is currently positioning him to become the new superpowered Kingpin of crime.
Leinil Yu's art has been a mixed bag so far. When it works, it works well. Yu dark and gritty art fits the book's underground tone quite well. However, Yu has a tendency to ink his own pencils, resulting in panels that are simply too dark and muddy to pass muster. The art problems have been less noticeable as of late, so let's hope that trend continues. It's nearly impossible to ignore this series simply on the basis of its overall relevance and importance, but luckily it's been an entertaining read every single month.
Currently: Decent
Future Prognosis: Good
