comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=10611Well check em out Apparently, this is going to be very important to Marvels 2008 event as well. My first thought on the double page picture was hey, maybe the arts starting to improve, but the rest of the pages proved much to the contrary. I mean It just looks like cutouts of the avengers standing in front of backdrops filled with ninjas for all the single pages

I forgot to mention that I love that Wolverine seems to be trailing streamers like one of those "rhythmic gymnasts." You know, the ones that twirl and flip with the long ribbon thingies? But, Judas Priest that art stinks! Has anyone else noticed that Yu seems to love to draw people in a 90-degree profile shot with their mouth showing as a perfect semi-circle? It's really weird.

Half the population of Japan must go to secret Ninja school to have these numbers getting clobbered every time they fight the Avengers.

Do you suppose Bendis is getting the same kind of satisfaction and self-worth out of this that Stan and Jack got out of the Galactus 3-parter, or that Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams got out of their GL/GA story? I know that not every creator knocks it out of the park with every story, but man -- this has been nothing but crap for four years now!!! When's the good stuff coming?
I've now saved$15 by boycotting this kind of tripe.

Boy, that is some really bad art.
Must everyone do an "homage" to Elektra vs. Bullseye?
Those claw contrails, or whatever they are, have to go. They have to. And is Cage stabbing someone in the dome on that double page spread?
Page 3 seems to answer the question: how many ninjas does the Hand employ - all of them! But they remind me a cockroaches in that scene.
In the last page, did Cage tag Elektra with a punch? If so, why is she still conscious? Even if that's her kicking him, that will only injure her, and she ought to know that by now! Also, fire won't bother Cage for very long, unless he's foolish enough to inhale before he evades it.
Is that the Sean McQuaid from the old Avengers Mailing List, and numerous articles all over the web, credited on Most Wanted Files?

Oh wait he's doing that in several books every month anyway. carry on...

This is indeed the weaker of the two books, though I'm excited to see where "New Avengers" goes from here. Interviews have indicated that the whole conspiracy subplot is going to be resolved soon, which will (probably) get rid of the Hand ninjas.
Yes, even I'm getting tired of the Ninjas.
And hopefully Yu.
It's funny. I was just reading the "New X-Men Annual 2001" last week for the UNCANNY X-PERIMENT and Yu's art was just amazing. Very energetic and vibrant. Great stuff, really. But what the heck happened here?

But what the heck happened here? Uh...close personal contact with Bendis? Is "suck" a communicable disease? RSC Probably not. The art in "Fallen Son: Wolverine" was terrible, as was the whole "X-Men Revolution" event back in 2000. Sometimes Yu can bring it . . . and a lot of the time, he can't. EDIT: Y'know, I can't help but notice that my Karma keeps getting hit each time I express a positive opinion about Mighty Avengers or New Avengers. ~W~

Holy Crap!
What the HELL is happening to your karma, the w???
(Of course if we used a certain forummer's logic it would have to be him but...)
Seriously though, I seem to recall it being at TEN or so, maybe I'm wrong... I exalted you to 8 for now anyway...
And as the w says, NA is better than pre civil war if worse than Mighty.
Four?
2004-2007 is three.... Unless I'm missing something? And even then I think it's actually a little less... (only 34 issues, right?) Plus the general positive enough feedback for the first arc and the Disassembled issues among others, and the insane sales....
Yeah I'm pretty sure he gets the same satisfaction. Is that so wrong?

So it's three years -- seems like a heckuva lot longer! I guess in terms of Bendis getting satisfaction from what he does, we'd have to assume that he is doing his best and is left proud of his output. That being said, then, he and I must live on different planets, in different realities, or something. Because I just don't (and can't it seems when it comes to Avengers) have even one nice thing to say about the team since he took over at the end of Volume III. As I've had time to reflect on where the book has gone, this is (and I posted this today elsewhere) the lowest point in Avengers history, bar none. Give me Al Milgrom on the art and a white, nekked Vision over this junk any day.

I'm glad I am not the only one that dislikes Yu's art. "Dislike" is actually too mild a term; I don't know exactly what it is about his work, but it really bothers me. Usually I don't have a really strong reaction to artwork but in his case it just sets me off. Even artists I've disliked in the past, like Frank Robbins, don't get to me like Yu does.
Of course taste is so very subjective; my boyfriend absolutely loathes Romita JR. I'm not a big JR jr fan - his work seems rather journeymanlike to me - but the BF can go on for what seems like hours decrying his artwork.

JR jr. is amateurish, scratchy, and an absolute aping of the kind of scribbling that has become Frank Miller since Dark Knight Returns #2.
Do I make myself clear?

I've hated John Jr's work since he took over the x-men way back when. Very crappy work, but I hear he's really fast....
The funny thing is his work on Iron Man was fairly good, but then he had Bob Layton doing the finish work.

Everyone here knows that I try my best to not criticize the art in the books unless I'm sure who to criticize.
But for this,.... Holy Crap, do they not have any kind of quality control? This art is so bad it should be in the last issues of Avengers volume 1.

That said, JR Jr is among the best in the business! In his early career this was true. More recently he's been entirely mediocre. I disliked his work on Amazing Spider-Man intensely.

There's an interview with Joe Quesada on Youtube where he talks about the grand idea of re-making The Avengers into the New Avengers. He says it is out-selling the X-Men franchise (He keeps calling it a "franchise" not a book)--in fact he says it's the biggest selling title in comics. For me, it's like a Lionel Richie album that sells 15 million copies--but you never know anybody who actually buys a Lionel Richie record or likes him enough to buy one. I just don't get it.

I just don't get it. well the funny thing is, they're doing exactly what made the X Men such a powerful selling entity in the first place. Every major event in marvel is going through the Avengers and is directly linked to them (House of M, Disassembled, Civil War). many of the most popular characters in marvel canon (in this case instead of wolverine and cable, it's wolverine and spider man) are members and many of the top names in marvel are drawing the book like Finch and Cho. I mean are they even remotely surprised that the books are selling well? If you put this much effort behind Captain Ultra, he would sell high sixties...

Dumb question -- ol' Captain Ultra is in the Initiative, right?
That Frightful Four try-out issue (way back in the FF, with Perez art) was a hoot!

Dumb question -- ol' Captain Ultra is in the Initiative, right? That Frightful Four try-out issue (way back in the FF, with Perez art) was a hoot! I believe so. Cap Ultra became a pet project for Scott Lobdell, I think, at one point so he's been popping up for a while now. and yes his 1st appearance is a hoot. Hoot is actually the best way to describe it That kind of fun humor which can be pulled off by good writers without destroying the tension of the story is sorely lacking these days.
