Happy Birthday to not one but two sensational sagacious Sagittarians: Humanbelly and Bobc! Hope it's a good one, guys, and that you're celebrating with plenty of cake and comics (not necessarily in that order).

Ohhhhhhhh, thanks a million, Shar-! You are, as ever, too kind (and unfailingly thoughtful).
Geeze, Bobc, we have the same birthday?? What are the chances? (Well, 365 to 1, I would imagine. . . )
It was a largely exhausting but enjoyable day, with an early morning trip in an unexpected snow storm to a local tree farm to get our tree. It was absolutely lovely weather, but- by the end- an extremely wet, muddy, and cold excursion. Got a terrific 10' tree, and much of the day centered around getting it up, inside, trimmed, lit & decorated. I am an unabashedly excessive Christmas Storm Trooper, so this is my meat & potatoes, as it were. Nothing comics related-- several small, highly appreciated, thoughtful gifts, and then season 3 of Twilight Zone, and Beatles Rock Band (sort of my "dream" gift--!). Just a lovely, lovely day. My Mom called and was flabbergasted that we hadn't gone out anywhere special-- but I just had no desire to. Kids are already crashed, wife's headed that way, and I'm not far behind. . .
Man, Bobc, I should've tried to snag you a scratch-n-dent Bowden statue or something. . . Happy Birthday! Now I understand why I like you. . . ('course, I do believe I'm your elder, so you must remember that it behooves you to refer to me as MISTER Humanbelly from here on out-)
heh-

Okay, so he's not a regular poster here, but I wanted to wish none other than Stan the Man (and I don't mean Musial) a Happy Birthday! Stanley Martin Lieber--better known as Stan Lee--was born on this day in 1922, and comics would never be the same. My life has been enriched by Stan's work (and I have a sneaking suspicion I'm not alone in this regard). Here's to you, Stan-- Excelsior! P.S. I'd like to wish our old friend, Dr. Hank Pym, a very Happy Birthday too.

Hope to see you too around for many more years! Then a happy birthday to Hank Pym and to Doctor Bong, who I believe had his big day not too long ago!! And finally a huge one to Stan, without whom we simply wouldn't be here today

What is it again-- the Dead Sea Scrolls? The Rosetta Stone? The U.S. Federal Income Tax code? Something equally impenetrable? (And hey, dare I ask if that Thor story you were percolating in your mind has had any further growth?) HB

Something equally impenetrable? (And hey, dare I ask if that Thor story you were percolating in your mind has had any further growth?) HB The translation is complete! No more sociology for me for a while ;D I've now been given another book... on the history of comics before and during the Wertham period. Now, that's more like it! The Thor story is moving veeery slowly in my mind. The difficult thing is to patch together all the various flashbacks, back stories and bits of information given in over 40 years of stories, especially outside the main Thor books. I've just finished reading the Poetic Edda, and I'm now moving on the Prosaic Edda and the Mythological Poems to get more familiar with speech styles, stanza, characters and so on. Then it will be a matter of mixing mythology and Marvel characterization/history into something decent. So... quite a lot to do still

This time it's from English to Italian, so you may already know the book. It's by David Hajdu's "The Ten Cent Plague" www.davidhajdu.com/books.htmlThat's a great assignment, Shiryu--congrats! The book has been in my library since last year, when it came out in paperback. It's a very good read, even if in some places it's obvious that the author is not a comic book reader. Also, Hajdu doesn't really connect comics to much other media at the time (crime or horror movies, for example), which surprised me since he's written other books on 20th century American cultural history (such as "Positively Fourth Street", about Dylan, Joan Baez, and their crowd). And while I understand that EC's practices and personnel (esp. Gaines) made them especially vulnerable to attacks by Wertham and others and led to EC's downfall, I would have liked more exploration as to why some comics (DC's for example) remained relatively unscathed. But those are minor quibbles. Overall, I enjoyed "The Ten-Cent Plague" a great deal and I always find something new in it each time I read it. It's a book that should interest anyone who wants to learn more about comics history, America after WW II, youth culture, censorship, scapegoating, etc., etc., etc.--in other words, it's a worthy addition to almost anyone's library.

Wow, it's Mr. Plexico's Birthday? Boy, he's, like, the mysterious boss with the enormous, private, penthouse office. Overseeing the lives of all of us faithful folks toiling away down below. . .
Like Mr. Macy in "Miracle on 34th Street", say. Or maybe Lord Vetineri from Discworld. Possibly Odin? Mephisto? (Welllll, it's hard to put that sort of thing into a specific box. . . )
Happy Birthday, sir! Sooner or later, I too will be picking up your much-admired tomes-!
