Considering the roster additions to the team under Bendis, I was wondering about Dr. Strange. How do you feel about his being a member? Is he a good choice?
Putting aside the whole Illuminati deal, I always figured him more as the work-alone type (but not necessarily a loner such as Spidey or DD). As seen with the Defenders, he can work well with others, but given his area of expertise and adventures, being part of a world-wide famous superhero team doesn't strike me as being first on his agenda.
Characters do change though and I admit, having not read the majority of Bendis' run, I don't know the exact reasons why Stephen joined to begin with.
Thoughts?

I was still receiving New Avengers via subscription when Strange was "officially" made a member of that team after being their benefactor/patron/associate for SO long, and I will fully disclose that I loved the idea, and thought that Bendis handled the moment itself with a rather nice, deft sentimentality. There was so little at that point that I was liking about the whole franchise and what BMB had done with it-- but for me that was a solidly nice bit of growth for both the team and Doc's character. Here's the thing. . . yes, Doc's always been a tremendous loner, except it seems like he clearly craves friendship and companionship, and does build long & lasting relationships. His bond w/ Spiderman (in MTU in particular) is both surprising and heartwarming. His paternal role in the Defenders was clearly good for him as well as the team-- keeping him connected with the basic, real-life interplay that comes with forging close relationships. If I'm remembering the NA issue correctly, he didn't want to actually join, but was ultimately convinced because of the strong feeling exhibited by the rest of the team. And of COURSE he should be on the Earth's premiere, ready-for-any-threat strike team. Of the Heroes on the planet, he IS one of the Mightiest! Right?? With great magical power comes great responsibility, and all that. Sheesh, he could have come in mighty handy when Morgan Le Fey goofed up reality, or against ANY incarnation of Ultron, or Graviton/Nefaria, etc, etc. I have no idea what kind of role he's playing these days, but the fact that he'd always be a sober, honest, dignified, respectful presence on the team is incredibly attractive to me. I think I may have pointed out at some point that a "Team-Buddy" relationship between him and the Vision strikes me as being almost inevitable. Oo! And the Jarvis/Wong interplay! Priceless! HB

I agree he would be a valuable asset for the team, after all a magician / sorcerer is always handy and his powers are different enough from Wanda's to make him new and original.
The problem, as it often happened during Bendis' run, was with the execution. Strange was depowered for most of his time with the Avengers, he had lost the title of Sorcerer Supreme to Dr Voodoo and didn't regain it until the very final Bendis issue, following which he seems to have left the group. So all he did provide was the odd illusion / means of escape and little more. Currently he is still part of the Illuminati, but that doesn't mean much as all they do is talking.
