How will we be remembered?

How will we be remembered? Oo-- possibly an overly-broad question there, pym? What's the parameter of "we"? Is it humanity in general? Modern society? Comic Book fans? The stalwart members of this board? Hmm. . . and in the context of what timeframe? (Boy, a guy tries to ask a simple discussion question, and he gets all of these demands in return!) HB

Greetings HB umm...The stalwart members of this board...for all time. I remember the first day that I arrived here. I was...and still am in awe of your knowledge and lore of all things Avenger. You are a rare breed. How shall you be remembered?

Will we....? Well, no--- really, we won't. But I don't mean that to sound cynical or snarky or dismissive at all. . . not a bit. It's simply the nature of a highly-specialized board like this. It's an on-going, transitory discussion that lasts for years, w/ hundreds of tangents and side-subjects, that is centered around a common passion amongst its members-- that passion being the Avengers in particular and comic books & characters in general. But the point isn't so much about leaving a mark of significance behind us, as it is about the interaction and exchange of ideas that takes place when being actively (or even passively, like ol' cfb, for instance) involved. It truly doesn't bear any significance at all, I don't think, to the broader world around us-- but I absolutely believe that by putting fingers to keyboard, by organizing thoughts into a reasoned argument or analysis, by formulating words to convey an experience or opinion, by having the experience of seeing other people's legitimate points of view that are contrary to our own and giving ourselves permission to live w/ that with grace-- by doing ALL of these things which happen pretty much w/out our being aware of it here-- we are training ourselves to become better thinking, more tolerant, and deeper-visioned citizens of that broader world that I mentioned above. We could be discussing the relative merits of John Buscema's inkers or Jan's costume choices, or we could be weighing the legitimacy of latter-day hybridized breeds of Macaw-- the important thing is that we're exercising our brains to do it, AND we're interacting with others in a social environment which stimulates our personal growth. This is win/win. Even my lovely wife says so (she calls you folks my "little friends"-- sorry!). The mark we'll leave- and hopefully have left- is, of course, on each other. That's how and where we'll be remembered. And that's great-- it's really, really great. If you can touch a few lives, connect with a few lives, even just bring a smile to a few faces when they need them, then you (and we) have made as indelible a contribution to the well-being of our human brethren as nearly anyone can. Could Ozymandias have said the same, as it turns out? No. . . we've surpassed him, as well, I daresay. Have a passion. Have something to take delight in. Be active in its pursuit. Share it with a like-minded community. The memories created there are all the legacy anyone would ever need. HB (P.S.--- who clearly will be remembered as "that guy who talked us all OVERBOARD!"

Me, I'm having one of those columns carved that retells my conquests and noble deeds in low relief. It's sequential art, but it holds up to the weather.

Hmm. Maybe Ralph Wolf and Sam Sheepdog-? Oscar Madison and Felix Unger...? Ooh, tougher fit, that. In the play, at least, they both ultimately conform a bit to the other's lifestyle, saving their friendship, but actually setting them on slightly different paths. What they never actually do (!) is maintain a healthy, solid relationship while agreeing to fundamentally disagree. TV series? Yeah, that's more like it. (Or am I hopelessly over-thinking this??) Ah! James Carville and Mary Matalin! I mean, they're happily married for heaven's sake-! (Not that I've got my eye on ya, there, WS. . . ;D) HB
