Well, I'm still reading ACADEMY, and from the responses from last issues review, I see I'm not alone.
SPOILERS AHEAD
I liked this issue alot better than #28, even though #29 is a set-up issue for next issue's battle.
First off, I'm a big-time Hercules fan, but I miss the old Hercules, as I feel current writers haven't been writing him in character. Not necessarily his actions, but his verbage and demeanor. But Gage picks up right from the 70s-80s Herc; jovial, vain, but likable. Thanks for bringing back one of my favorite heroes.
Now #29 has a BIG cast....there's not much time for the Academy students to shine. But I've always loved big casts in my comics, as long as they are rendered nicely (Man, I do NOT miss Leinil YU's artwork, he was the worst). Grummet does a great job with the artwork, and the inks and colors are nice too.
And Gage writes everyone appropriately, IMHO. He really knows his Marvel Universe, and the "voices" of the characters. I never expected it, but I really am enjoying Gage's X-23.
My only gripe was the exchange between Loa, Mettle, and Hazmat. I read it over and over, and it just seems weird. Also, the inclusion of Sebastian Shaw seemed kind of forced, but it's the set-up for next issue.
I like bringing Madison Jefferies into the story, a throwback to old Alpha Flight. I would like to see him stay on as an Avengers staffer. I like when writers bring old characters and villains back.
A question about the X-kids, I know Loa, Dust, Surge, Pixie, and the Cuckoo sisters....and #29 introduced me to Velocidad and Transonic (horrible, horrible, code-names, IMO)....but can anyone tell me who the others are?
All in all, I enjoyed this issue after not enjoying the previous arc, and can't wait until next issues battle!
B+
