Boy, that sounds all high-concept, doesn't it?
An idle thought crossed my mind this morn, and it's kept bouncing around ever since. It's not strictly or necessarily in the Avengers realm, I suppose-- but the umbrella has gotten so large of late, that I don't see any current reason why it couldn't contain this as well.
There are so many-- SO MANY-- heroes in the MU that are either tragic because they've become monstrous in the process of acquiring their powers, OR they began their journey as artificial beings, and have ever since been trying to achieve that elusive status of being completely Human.
What if they had their own support group? (Which seems like an EXTREMELY good idea, given the almost universally sorry state of their mental health at on point or another-). What if that support group then found itself unexpectedly called upon to save the day from a nefarious baddy? Ooo-- someone vain and physically beautiful and truly evil-- like Tyrannus, say? The larger writing point of this group, of course, would be to explore issues of being different from/outside of society; of struggling with self-acceptance; of measuring below the surface; of facing and dealing with disabilities; of perserverance, loyalty, sacrifice and empathy; and possibly, in some circumstances, of failure.
Mind you, this would not want to be a "Monster Squad" scenario-- and not exactly an X-Men one, either. How would this play, do you think? The interplay of potentially MANY different, long-established, deep-history MU characters is what strikes me as so interesting.
Who to pull in? (At least at first?)
Not the Hulk. His case is a genre' all its own. Plus, he's human PLENTY of the time, so he able to "escape" quite a bit. Perhaps that's a ground-rule. The character must be stuck/trapped/whatever as someone in an unmistakably inhuman form. Someone who draws stares whenever they go out to get a burger. So:
Ben Grimm (naturally)
Sharon Ventura (She-Thing, or whatever she might be these days)
Beast
Vision
Machine Man
Jocasta
Deathlok (Luther Manning-- geeze, I'm gonna get him into the Avengers one way or another-!)
Gargoyle (little old guy from late in the Defenders run. . . )
Mettle (from Avengers Academy)
Armadillo (yes, I know he's really a bad guy-- but geeze what a pathetic shmoe-- could REALLY use another chance).
Dragon Man, maybe?
Nightcrawler, w/out the image inducer?
See, this is already a lot without having to put much thought into it-! Although I feel like there have to be more female characters out there that fit the profile. . .
Of this particular bunch, I'd like to see a session or two with Ben, Sharon, Machine Man, Deathlok, Mettle, and Armadillo.
This catch anyone's fancy-- or is it all just too heady & speculative, hmm?
