Been reading the mansion siege tpb and really enjoying it, took a detour for the crossover issue of Cap where he faces Whirlwind and the trapster.
Not the best issue, Stern's writing style is fairly dated but his stories still really hold up but Gruenwald (who I have a lot of time for ideas wise, he's written quite a lot that I liked) is just so exposition heavy and his cap so hung up on long forgotten little plot points that it really didn't work all that well and I can see why they didn't include it in the collection. To be fair his villains actually think about what they are doing which was one of the things i always liked about his work but his actual scripting and the quite bland art are miles away from Stern/Buscema/Palmers work in avengers itself
Still I was wondering whether that incarnation of the Masters of Evil turned up anywhere else during the period?

There is also a Spider-Man crossover, where he fights Absorbing Man and a still very traumatized Titania (after being trashed by SM on Battleworld). It fits in the middle of the Hobgoblin arc, when Flash had been framed as the supervillain, and I think it's briefly mentioned in the Siege TPB.
There should also be a Namor/Tiger Shark crossover, but I haven't read it.

Wonder where that Namor one would be, aside from a few alpha flight appearances Avengers was his main book at the time. I'll look at tiger shark's marvel chronology page in a bit.
Forgot the spider-man issue, I have a copy of that somewhere.

No clue on the namor thing but I just reread spider-man 283 and enjoyed it a lot. A much better book than Cap 324.
I'd forgotten just how many corners they had written themselves into with the Hobgobblin plot, they even have the Hobgoblin threatening roderick Kingsley with both of them clearly on panel.
Of course Roger Stern eventually used an evil twin twist to show that Kingsley could still be the hobgoblin.
the titania/absorbing Man stuff is good and there is nice art from Frenz. The Wasp's appearance is a little weird, the mansion seems to be under Zemo's control and she is still shooting off to respond to a tip off about Creel but it's a good issue.

I'm a big fan of the 80s Spider-Man, possibly because they were his first stories I've ever read (my first ever Spidey story was the fight against the Spot) and I remember that fight against Titania and Creel to be enjoyable. Not the best issue of that period (it's hard to beat the two-issue Firelord battle or the murder of Ned Leeds) but good, especially the ending with Spider-Man swinging away for a change.

the early 80s british spider-man weekly was the first Marvel comic that I read in any consistent fashion so its a period that has a lot of charm for me.
I'd read random stuff when i was on holiday or picked up at jumble sales or in christmas annuals or whatever but spider-man weekly was the first comic I actually read issue after issue of and could follow the stories developing. More the Stern ASM and Mantlo Peter Parker than DeFalco, loads of Black Cat and Cloak and Dagger stories and the Kingpin always hanging around in the background but I am a fan of DeFalco's run too.
